INT. UNIVERSITY LECTURE HALL - DAY
PROFESSOR, a woman of 35 years, is seating on the edge of the table and giving a lecture to the students.
All of them are listening to her very attentively.
Not just visual content of images but everything that happens during the interaction between...
...a client and a photo has therapeutic significance in PhotoTherapy. Looking at a snapshot evokes...
...feelings and emotions according to person's inner reality which defines understanding of what he sees.
Therefore, the actual meaning does not lie in photo itself but in nonmaterial...
...abstract interaction between the snapshot and the viewer.
Miss Wiseup!
Yes, Josh.
So, if the photograph itself does not carry actual meaning, it's only our perception,...
...so does it mean that there is no objective meaning of any photograph? Does it mean that...
...perception of the same photograph will differ depending upon who is doing the looking?
That's correct, Josh. It's called Photo-Projectives. And because people always project meaning...
...onto a photograph - there is no other way to encounter one. I want to admit that it...
...applies not only to personal snapshots and family albums but also to photographs which...
...have no direct connection to the clients. For instance newspaper pictures, postcards,
book covers and so on. Therapists explore these photos and detect larger patterns of...
...repeated themes, personal symbols and metaphors, and other visual information that client might...
...have been unaware of themselves in the original moment of taking the snapshot or choosing the photographs.
That makes PhotoTherapy a very useful therapeutic instrument which helps...
...client to realize their own particular way of interpreting the world. Before moving to...
...Therapeutic Photography techniques let's start from the examples.
I asked you to bring in photos which you had to choose from the given category list.
Please raise your hand for those of you who chose situational photos.
Few students are raising their hands. NATE LEARSON is one of them.
Good. And who took those photos on his own?
There is only Nate's hand.
It means my case is the most clinical, isn't it?
It only proves that every person chooses the most comfortable way.
That's why the category list you received was so long.
Come here with your snapshots, Nate.
Miss Wiseup stands up and switches on the projector behind her.
Nate comes down to her holding an envelope with his snapshots.
How many did you choose for showing?
Five.
Put them one by one on a projector.
Nate takes snapshots out and puts them one by one on a projector.
The snapshots captured a little boy and his father having fun by playing in the park.
They are very beautiful, Nate. Very sincere.
Thank you, Miss Wiseup.
Nate, tell us please why did you choose that place and that moment for shooting?
To be honest I didn't choose anything. I just went out searching for some stories or situations.
Then I saw the park and thought that it could be the right place. I've planned nothing.
What made you choose this little boy and his father as an object of your shooting?
I just saw them joyfully playing in the open space.
Two of these snapshots captured a blurred woman's figure in the back.
It is little boy's mother, isn't it?
Yes, it is. I have a very beautiful picture series of the family together.
But it is this one you've decided to show us. Why?
Because they are the most sincere. Well no, that's not the word I'd use... It is the most...
...open moment with streams of pure emotions with no limits. Grown-ups unlike children often...
...try to control their emotions. But here we can see pure naked bright emotion. It's love.
Nate, do you have picture series of boy's parents only?
Yes, I have.
Do you like it?
Yes, very much.
And how does that series differ from the one you've just shown us?
I cannot say, really.
Is that one more reserved?
M-m-m... No.
Nate, tell me please do these snapshots of father and son playing evoke any memories of yours?
Yes, they do. I remember my father used to play with me, my sister and brother...
...in the park in front of our house. It didn't happen very often due to the pressure of his work.
After that our sides had been hurting from laughing for the whole week.
And the last question if you don't mind.
Nate understands what Professor is trying to ask.
I got your point. Yes, I do miss it.
INT. LEARSON COMPANY CONFERENCE HALL - EVENING, SUNSET
All of the department managers gathered round-table in the conference hall of Learson publishing company.
At the head of the table there is a man who looks 45 years old (in fact...
...he is actually 61) named GREGORY LEARSON. He is dressed in a quality cut suit and a white shirt.
The fancy bowtie around his neck seems awkward in the tense atmosphere of the conference hall.
His face is clean shaven. He has a neat haircut; not too short and not too long.
His hair is starting to turn grey around his temples. This man's appearance is likable.
He has a calm, clear and very convincing voice.
As you remember in the previous conference we had the discussion about company development strategy...
...due to the forthcoming economic crisis. I have thought everything out and here is my decision...
We're not going to do any downsizings as well as we're not going to change the prices of our publications.
And we're definitely not going to cancel any of them.
Many of attendees exchange glances but keep silence.
FRED, Gregory's eldest son, are also present in the conference hall.
But father this is insane!
Greg looks grimly at his son and silences him.
I'm not finished yet.
Fred is very angry but he becomes silent.
As always we shall count on our constant customers, not on the one-time sale. We must convince...
...our readers that not all of the changes for the worse. And our employees must feel confident...
...about the future and that no one will be on the street. I am not saying that we can avoid...
...the crisis completely. But we can meet this challenge hanging together like one big family.
Suddenly the knock at the door is heard. MARY, the secretary, enters the conference hall.
She is a woman who looks 40 years old with a serious face. Mary is wearing a formal dress.
Her shape is completed by fine framed glasses. But for all that Mary has calm voice.
Excuse me Mr. Learson. You asked to let you know when your wife comes.
She is waiting in your office.
Thank you, Mary. Excuse me.
He's left the conference hall.
INT. LEARSON'S OFFICE - EVENING, SUNSET
ELIZABETH LEARSON, Greg's wife
is standing in front of chest of drawers with plenty of framed photographs on it.
All those photos depict their children captured at different ages and also Gregory Learson and
Elizabeth themselves. In the centre there is a photograph of their family together.
Elizabeth takes it and looks at it thoughtfully.
Greg enters the cabinet. He is strained but the moment Greg sees his wife his strain disappears immediately.
Elizabeth is standing with her back to him.
Greg is coming closer and embraces her.
Good evening, Mrs. Learson.
Greg kisses Elizabeth gently.
Happy anniversary.
Elizabeth smiles softly.
Good evening, Mr. Learson.
I feel you've planned something.
I want to renew this photograph.
What is wrong about this one?
Elizabeth is distracting from the photo and turning toward Greg.
What's Fred done this time?
He wants to choose the path of least resistance.
But he doesn't have to agree with you all the time.
At least when I'm right.
But you are always right.
That is what I'm saying.
And that is why you can't forget about your work in our anniversary, can you?
But I do remember about our anniversary.
Nothing can be said against it.
Don't need to. Moreover, I have one more surprise for you.
She looks at him cunningly.
I'll be back in a flash. Just in and out.
He steps jokingly as if there was music.
Go.
Your wish is my command!
INT. LEARSON COMPANY CONFERENCE HALL - EVENING, SUNSET
Discussion of Greg's decision is in progress, especially between Fred and Rex.
Rex don't you understand? We must downsize and cancel our low-profitable publications.
Greg's approaches have always worked...
...and due to them company is on top. I see no reason to doubt him now.
You're always on his side.
Greg enters the conference hall and everybody stops talking.
He takes his place at the head of the table.
Let's continue...
