Grand Valley welcomed a record number
of first-year students,
and their academic scores are higher.

and out-of-state students.
Enrollment in science, technology,
engineering, math
and health professions is also
up significantly.
Students are voting with their feet
to come to a university that was named one
of the best in the Midwest
by the Princeton Review.
For the 18th year,
Grand Valley was named one
of America's 100 Best College Buys.
It's been named a military Friendly
School for the 5th year
and the Sierra Club recognized Grand
Valley's sustainability efforts
by naming it one
of the country's greenest universities.
U.S. News and World Report ranked it 5th
in the list of Top Public Regional
Universities in the Midwest.
And, these students are giving back
to the region...
of recent graduates;
nearly 90 percent are working in Michigan.
Grand Valley State University has opened a
library like one you've never seen before.
The Mary Idema Pew Library Learning
and Information Commons has spaces
for traditional quiet work...
but also active learning
and group projects.
14-hundred community members supported the
new library with its innovative spaces
and concepts.
It's considered a model
for 21st century learning.
Visiting high school counselors
volunteered that we got it
absolutely right.
That our library is a world-class facility
that will attract gifted
and affluent students to Grand Valley.
This library is changing students'
experiences with innovations
like the Knowledge Market.
The Mary Idema Pew Library was built
for the way students really work
and learn.
It will be a game changer in education
for years to come.
Grand Valley State University is meeting
the needs of biomedical engineering,
which is one of the fastest growing
professions in the nation.
A biomedical engineer uses the design
and problem-solving skills acquired i
engineering to improve people's health
and quality of life.
They will be directly involved in projects
that effect patients lives.
Grand Valley biomedical engineering
students have been working
with Lincoln Developmental Center
in Grand Rapids to help students
who need wheelchairs and help
to operate them.
Having a device
that converts their own custom seating
manual wheelchair into a power wheelchair,
they're able to have more success.
Students in the biomedical program
at Grand Valley are learning that success
in the classroom can translate
into unbelievable success
in someone else's world.
Grand Valley State University's Seidman
College of Business has a new home...
dedicated to university founder,
Bill Seidman.
The L. William Seidman Center also houses
the university's community
outreach centers.
It has the latest technology,
including a trading room
with Bloomberg terminals...
and meeting rooms students can schedule
on their smart phones.
This facility provides us a great
opportunity to promote
that we are top-notch business school
that has some great programs
to attract talent at every stage
of managerial development.
There are part-time, full-time
and executive MBA programs...in addition
to a thriving undergraduate program.
I know that my employer values my Grand
Valley education beyond belief.
The college's location
in downtown Grand Rapids connects students
with industry leaders, internships
and opportunities.
Grand Valley State University is second
in the nation and tops in its conference
in NCAA sports.
This is the 12th year the Lakers captured
one of the top two spots
in the national Directors' Cup.
Lakers won one national championship
and 11 GLIAC Championships for the year.
Women's Cross Country won the Division II
national championship.
Laker women claimed seven league crowns,
