Universities around the country are heading into the community
to encourage taking science and maths at secondary school
and health sciences, engineering architecture at tertiary level.
Joe Glen attended their first event today in Porirua.
An expo organised by Te Ropu Awhina to promote and introduce
science and engineering courses available at tertiary level
to high school students and the community.
It's a great initiative by Victoria University
to bring this to the heart of the community.
Students had nothing but praise for what was on display.
It's good to see the things you can make,
and the things you can't learn in school.
More than 12 different science courses
were on display from Victoria, Otago and Auckland Universities.
They say it's a good opportunity for secondary students
to see things that they can't experience at school.
There are very few Maori taking science.
This is inspiration for them,
they are able to look around at the various science programmes.
The organisers hope that today's event will benefit the students.
Hopefully this will give our children a taste of it.
One of these students could become a renowned scientist.
The same event will be held in other regions next year.
