My research is on the theatrical representations of madness in professional London productions
and RSC productions that have visited London of Hamlet between 1980 and 2010.
Alongside recent theatrical history I am studying developments in psychiatry in that time, including
the closure of mental hospitals and the growth of the care in the community system, the development
of the internet and how that's influenced charities concerned with mental health. Changes
in medication for mental health, the Mental Health of 1983 and the Mental Capacity Act
of 2005. So, I'm looking at medical history alongside the theatrical history and seeing
what patterns emerge and how these things have influenced Hamlet's madness, Ophelia's
madness and also the staging of the ghost have occurred and have changed in that time.
