Welcome to Barbados, a beautiful coral island that was pushed out of the sea by volcanic
activity long long ago. Here you will find a warm and friendly people known as Beigans.
The island gained its independence in 1966 becoming a self governing member of the British
Commonwealth. The island itself is 21 miles long but 14 miles wide so it is fairly small
in size but big in romance and adventure. Barbados is the most Easterly Island in the
Caribbean chain and it has a population of approximately 260,000 people. Did you know
that this is one of the few islands that was not discovered by Christopher Columbus? Bridgetown
is not only the capital of Barbados but it is also one of the oldest cities in the English
speaking Caribbean. Sugar is considered the main crop on the island but it is tourism
that is the island's primary source of income. If you plan to hit the shops while in Barbados
remember they accept the US dollar though the official currency is the Barbados dollar.
White sandy beaches, tropical nights and breathtaking scenery make Barbados what some like to call
the real fantasy island.
