Hey everyone, Luis Perez here with a quick tutorial
for OS X Mavericks accessibility and in this tutorial I'm going to focus on
the enhanced closed captioning support in OS X Mavericks, specifically
how you can change the appearance of your captions. So here's a video I've created
that's already captioned and now if I play that video we're going to look at the captions
in the classic style that we're used to.
So that's the way you're used to seeing captions, just white text with a
black box behind it. So now let's take a look at how we can change this
in OS X Mavericks. So to do that I'm going to go into the Accessibility
settings by choosing Apple, System Preferences,
then I'll choose Accessibility
and then over on the left side under Hearing I'm going to choose Captions.
So here's the classic style. I can then
go to a default style where the text looks a lot nicer
and then there's a large text option for people who need large text
because they can't see the captions too well.
Now here I can also create my own styles. So if I
click on the plus I can give this style a name
(typing)
And then for my style I can adjust
the background color so if I want to make this blue you can see the
background has changed. I can change the background opacity.
So I could remove it altogether and just make it transparent.
I usually leave it set to semi-transparent and for any of these options
I can allow the video to override what I have chosen here
or if I don't want it to do that I can just uncheck the box.
So now I'm going to force my style regardless of what the video specifies.
Going down the line here I can also change the text color
the text size, the font
and a number of other options for text and background.
Once I've set all my options
for the caption style I can go ahead and just click on
Ok and now my style is saved here on the list.
I can go back in and edit it at any time that I want
and then I want to make sure that I check
prefer closed captions and SDH or subtitles for the Deaf and hard of hearing
instead of standard subtitles. So now that we've
set our options in the Accessibility settings let's go back to our video
play it again and now you can see the captions are
much easier to read.
So that's just a quick peek
into the enhanced closed captioning support in OS X Mavericks
You can create your own custom styles to make the captions
much easier to read.
