The reasons why I am crazy enough to want to become a schoolteacher in an underserved
community match up well with the reasons why AUSL exists in the first place. As you know,
AUSL was created to completely transform CPS schools that were on track to being closed
down. AUSL sees these schools that have been failing year after year... and yet, somehow,
there is a hope. These schools don't have to be shut down! In fact, these failing schools
have the potential to compete with any school in America and even the rest of the world.
AUSL's mission is inspiring, it is bold, and it is something I want to dedicate my life
to supporting. Chicago is my home. So, when I see students drop out of CPS schools...
man, those are my neighbors. Those are our brothers and sisters that are dropping out.
And, that is tragic. It is absolutely heart-wrenching seeing these kids quit on the system because
they feel like school was a waste of their time. There's this one quote, that is most
commonly attributed to Confucius, which goes, "Choose a job you love, and you will never
have to work a day in your life." We've all heard it a million times, but this quote really
stands true for me. I know people who have survived the AUSL Residency program who would
devote like 70 to 80 hours every week in their first years of teaching. This is a commitment
that I am prepared for. For me, challenges are exhilarating. I enjoy chasing what seems
impossible. Giving up is not an option - especially when it comes to the fate of this rising generation.
And, that is why I want to be a teacher in an underserved community. Thank you for taking
the time out to listen, and thank you for your consideration.
