- A question on the back, Sabina ?
- Let's go, Pierre-François, on the other side
- Glibert Plean from "Le Telegrame"
- Yes François, you had never sailed in the southern seas, you showed there what looked for us like an insolent serenity and easiness
By what have you been surprised in those seas ?
-Well, I haven't been too surprised, and perhaps that the thing which makes that I've been able to managed it.
it's all the interest of the preparation on training, it's all the interest of having worked with "Mer Agitée"
To have worked with Michel. I was going there, indeed, in the unknown
but while being damn well informed, anyway I tried to do everything to be well informed
and perhaps that's why I haven't been too surprised, and have been able to face it.
But certainly, perhaps if there's something which surprised me, it's as I was saying previously, it's the succession it's the repetition
I was telling myself that we would have 1 or 2 peaceful ridges, and in fact when you have the ridges
there's 20 knots of wind and you have BP at 5 miles so ...
you set spinnaker, big gennak, etc, you maneuver every 5 minutes
well, roughly there's no rest time
I told that once, I've got the impression that the southern seas, even the Vendee Globe, it's quite simple
You start, you take huge storms, during the storms you break things
honestly you can't do anything, anyway when it's going super fast you should not try to fix things
the boat moves so much, is so uncomfortable, that roughly, you can lay down
what the numbers fly
and check that everything is alright
or not !
It passes, you write what broke, what don't works very well, and as the wind soften you try to fix what broke, to face the storm coming the day after
It's like that quite all the time. And so, I've often said that, and each time people were saying that's bluff, etc ...
the moments when there's a *** load of wind, when we're going very fast, that's quite the moments when we can rest
cause as soon as the wind soften, we got lots of things to do !
so quite, when it blows, you can't do anything on the boat, it's the only moment when you have to sit and wait for it to pass.
- A question here.
- Yes, Oprah Winfrey
I would like to know what product, other than adrenaline you used during this race
- What substance, is it ?
Adrenaline it's sure that I took quite some !
a little bit more than usual !
What else I don't know, certainly ... well I don't know how to explain it
but I think that somewhere, the word passion is to weak.
the fascination I have for this race since .. always
I think makes that .. it was making me going faster
I was making me do the things and move forward
- A question, let's go
- Thierry Willemotte "Le Soir" newspaper, belgium, first thank you for the emotions you gave us during 78 days
One question : you seem to cast the doubt about a further participation or not here
is this because you have to digest this victory and so leave yourself the time to take you decision ?
or did you already decided somewhere in your head that perhaps a second time is not playable
cause you want to enjoy this one, and not put yourself at risk in regard of all the records you broke during this edition ?
- Well, it's resonant here, I've trouble to hear you, perhaps I'm deaf with this race...
If I'll start again ? Roughly, if I want to start again on a VG is that it ?
Well I don't know, I'll need a little bit of time, that I breathe out a little bit, take a few time, have 2 or 3 nights
four years ago at Mich's press conference, anybody would have came to see my saying ...
there's a thing to go on a Vendee Globe, I would have go. If it had been an Optimist, I would have gone on the VG on an Optimist
and I would have certainly found it very good !
and well, no, this time I would not start again any old how
I think that I had this strength, this envy to do it which was really really strong
if you ain't got it, the Vendee Globe is an ordeal, it's a punishment
I think that if you ain't got this envy, deep down inside you to do this race
one should really not got ! Me I know that I would never go
if deep down inside my guts I ain't got the envy to do it again.
Today, right now I ain't got it, but perhaps that in two days I'll have it, perhaps in one week ..
and in a way, that's something that we don't control. It will come, or not, I don't know
But that's the way it is, and I'll never go if I ain't got it deep down inside me, cause it's a stupid thing, it's dangerous and it's not sane.
- A question here.
- ???
The small adhesive dressing that you have, is that a blood test, why did you did it ?
and second question : you're looking for a sponsoring for the socks ? why are you bare foot ?
-Well ...
So I was in a small room just next to here where ... eh we have a medical monitoring all along the year with the "Pole Finistère Course au large"
and so we had a blood test at the start, and there I was having a blood test at the finish, to know what ...
the thing we could have lost, having a medical monitoring
and best to do it right now, cause some says that tonight it's going to be a party !
we are going to eat, drink and all, and if we do it in one week, things would have changed
and well, we had the aim to do it right now.
and well, at the same time, we had a weigh-in, so I was in underwear for it.
And I don't really want to put my boots back on !
in which I am since a few days ...
- Did you lost weight ?
- Not at all ! I think that I've took a few grams
not a lot but ... I think that as if nothing ... eh ... so I had enough to eat !
I started with ... it's not the obsession of lacking, but .. well yes perhaps a little bit !
I really wanted not to have to ration myself, so we took the start with 87 days
plus seven days
not fun, light, but If you sail 95 days, you have what to eat.
so I wasn't lacking !
and that's really good, cause as if nothing, we burn calories on the boat !
The race has been hard until the end, the last weeks we had to work hard
and I've peck a little bit in the next days, for the pleasure to choose the thing that I wanted
we have daily bags, which are in big bags where there is 15 days
and so we I arrived one week ago to the last bag which was going up to 90 days
I knew that I wasn't going to use 90 days, there I started to peck a little bit everywhere, and it was a good feeling to peck a little bit everywhere !
- Thank you, one question and after I come back .. but before the question
those who need to board to go meet Armel Le Cleac'h, boarding in 3 minutes !
go !
- Raphael Bonami, "Ouest France", earlier on the podium, you had a really intense emotion when you refereed to your boat
can you tell us about the relationship which now links you with this machine ?
- It's an awesome relationship ! I'm really really proud of the boat Macif
And this, I tell it for all the team who worked to build this boat
it's an awesome boat !
I also want to point out that the second, a-priori, if everything goes well in a few minutes
the second is quite the sistership
It is, as far as I know, the last two boats on which Hubert Desjoyeau worked
well I think that he has done a good job !
and I'm proud to have sailed on this boat, and to have learned tremendously about her
I think that at the start of this race
not that she was a stranger, cause I followed the conception and all that
there were lots of people working with me on that, and somewhere, I was more a spectator of all that
indeed I was adding my "input" and all the envies, the needs I had to sail well
but roughly, I was very spectator of all that
and during this race, I think that I've appropriate this boat, because ... I was inside
I sailed with her, I listened to here, I felt her
and that's really very great to live that
and I think that we have awesome machines ! and ...
so I'm engineer by formation,
and I think that a part of the Vendee Globe's pleasure, is to be able to develop those wonderful boat, build those wonderful boats and be able to live with those wonderful boats
- A question over there, Sabina and after we'll go to the other side, let's go.
-Sorry to call upon you, but can you do the same thing is French, for French televisions ?
on the channel's emotion
- On the channel's emotion, well it's extraordinary ! And even if I had lived it four years ago as a spectator
but still really close from the action
I was at Foncia's bow
This time I've been surprised, I wasn't expected this !
well in my head I was in the race, I wasn't thinking to much to the channel those last days
But well, that's stunning, that's just extraordinary !
and we are lucky, it means the the Vendee Globe goes well, that means that there's people interested in it, that there's people dreaming with us
and once again, I think that that's great
and I think that if we do what we do ... well if there wasn't all that, I would finish my round the world and tell myself ...
we are crazy ! why doing ... well indeed we learn things but ..
but it's useless what we do, that's just madness
and when you see all that, you tell yourself, perhaps that's madness, but it's useful, it useful to lots of people, and just for that it worth it !
- Bravo Francois, wonderful !
