People still love magazines, people still love to hold something in their hand, that
they can turn pages thats, thats paper. Um I think you can do things with paper that
you'll never be able to do electronically. It does a couple things, when you get an award.
First, it validates all of our work and all of our effort, and it shows the outside world
that what we are doing is really, um, cutting edge and really interesting. And also, it's
really good for the students to see it, that what they've done and all the hard work that
they've put in is, uh, coming back to us. We decided that we were going to print this
as a magazine, make it 100 pages, and um, that's how it evolved. And it just made it
all the more valid, and much more practical in terms of the application to do a magazine
instead of spreads. From the very beginning, Denis and I both, uh, reinforced the idea
that communication was the key to everything. We've always had a collaborative effort between
editorial photography and editorial design. Uh, the big thing about collaboration, uh,
from my perspective is that it really helps people understand and have empathy for people
in another discipline. Because they really learn from first hand experience, the skills,
the challenges, the vocabulary, um, everything that goes into what the other discipline brings
to the job. They had to think about 100 pages, they had to think about a cover, table of
contents everything that is part of what a magazine is, so I think the learning is much
much greater than it was in the past.
