The truth about cats, dogs and rabbits The truth about cats, dogs and rabbits. Each
year we survey thousands of pet owners across the UK for the PDSA Animal wellbeing report,
to find out the state of our pet nation. Sadly, the results don t paint a pretty picture.
Stressed. Lonely. Overweight. Bored. Aggressive, unfortunately this is life for over ten million
pets in the UK as a result of their needs being misunderstood. Of all the dogs currently
living in the UK, about half have never attended training classes during the first six months
of their lives. This is contributing to a behaviour meltdown with aggression and other
poor behaviour being shown on a regular basis. Virtually a quarter of all dogs in the UK
are not getting the recommended amount of companionship that they need. They are often
left alone for long periods of time, becoming lonely, distressed and bored. Around 1 in
3 dogs are now overweight or obese, which can seriously affect their health. Many are
given scraps, leftovers or inappropriate treats as part of their diet. Cats are also being
fed too many fatty treats. This is leading to high levels of cat obesity and some serious
health issues for our feline friends. The PAW report highlights that millions of cats
are not vaccinated. This makes them susceptible to a wide range of diseases, some of which
could prove to be fatal. Did you know that rabbits are highly social animals? They require
the company of other rabbits. Unfortunately our report found that over a million rabbits
around the UK currently live alone. Over half of all rabbits are also being fed the wrong
diet. Do you know what foods rabbits should eat? Rabbits should be fed a balanced diet
of their own body size in hay and grass, a handful of fresh vegetables along with a tablespoon
of nuggets everyday. Carrots should only be fed occasionally as they are high in sugar.
There s no doubt that the UK is a nation of animal lovers but many pets are not as healthy
