This tutorial is about using the microform scanners
Once you have a call number or accession number for a microform document,
head to the lower level of the library where the microforms are kept.
The shelves are labeled just like the stacks upstairs, and all issues of the same periodical are stored together.
Accession numbers are usually used for film, and call numbers for fiche.
Once you have your document, head to one of the machines like this.
You’ll have to turn the machine on, by flicking the little switch at the back.
Remove Microfiche from their paper covers and place them in between the glass slides.
You can pull this tray out for easier access, and once you have the Scan Pro program open,
you can move the tray back and forth and side to side to get the best position over the fiche.
Remove microfilm from their little boxes, place them on the machine like so, and thread the film under the big gear, over the little one,
through the glass slides, over the little one, under the big one, and through the eye of the other handle, like so.
Wind the first few loops by hand, and then you can use the auto wind for the rest.
Now you’re all set up and ready to look through your document. Remember, microfilm sometimes hold multiple issues of a journal,
magazine, paper, or what have you, so you might have to scroll through quite a bit before you find the page you’re actually after.
Play with each of the icons until you get the shot you want, since these allow you to zoom,
focus, rotate, sharpen, and otherwise fiddle with the image.
