He was crowned as "No. 1. DJ in the World" 3 times by DjMag and this year as Best DJ ever by MixMag.
I always wanted to be the best in something, that was always my dream.
Tijs is an ambitious, warm and gentle guy.
The name Tiësto is known all over the world, but who is this superstar?
KRO Profiel about an average guy from the south of the Netherlands who became a living legend.
It's a urinal now. I hear Tijs is behind the DJ booth, I still get goosebumps.
Tiësto, a passionate guy.
(Radio Breda) (Footage of the house he grew up in, in Breda)
They changed it, here was a bar with a small mixing console. (Club Spock, where Tiësto began as DJ before he got famous)
With 2 turntables, and we were her next to the bar.
It's a urinal now. But it was worse when Tijs worked here, he cleaned everything very firmly, also the walls.
Other personnel never wanted to do that, but Tijs had no problem with cleaning.
Also when he became more famous he still helped with cleaning after playing his music. Just out of habit.
Not so fond of this kind of stardom, when people grabbing me and are all over me. It makes me uncomfortable and nervous.
Then I'm like: Relax guys, it's just me.
What are you feeling at that moment? - I feel the tension of those people. They see Tiësto, not Tijs.
They only see that part of me. Only Tiësto and not Tijs.
The 'Zilveren Harp' (Dutch award for upcoming artists) goes to Tijs Verwest from Breda. Do you people know who this guy is?
DJ Tiësto has been crowned as NO.1 DJ in the world, for the first time it isn't a British DJ who is NO.1 in the DJ Mag Poll.
For the second time is Tiësto crowned as NO.1 DJ in the world. Tijs Verwest doesn't only play music from others...
...he also makes his own tracks. The music style is called Trance.
He is already crowned twice as NO.1 DJ, but this order (Ribbon from the Queen of the Netherlands) came as a surprise.
He won many prices, and tonight he added 2 new prices to that collection.
Another price for DJ Tiësto, today he won the Buma Export Price 2007.
Tiësto sold the most CD's and DVD's abroad.
I was born in Tuinzicht (District in Breda). It was a rough neighborhood where you need to stand up for yourself.
My first payed job was working at a farm when I was only 12 years old. With that money I always bought music.
I excelled in sport, running and marathon for instance. I was always one of the fastest.
I was obsessed of the triumph. Going for the victory, being the best in something. That was my dream.
I dreamed of playing for Feyenoord (Professional soccer club in Rotterdam), and scoring a lot of goals.
Or dreaming that I played tennis against Bjorn Borg, and won.
Just being the best in something.
About 2 years ago I changed my style, my album Kaleidoscope was released. I found new energy in making music.
You found new energy but you aren't settled yet, don't you want a more relaxed lifestyle?
I like it how it is now, you are talking about a boring lifestyle. Being home everyday, sitting on the couch. Everyday the same.
Haven't you seen how I live. Now in Miami, parties. Travel around the world. Going to the most beautiful countries, cities, hotels.
You are selling your lifestyle to me now.
It was typical Tijs that he was always busy with music, making mixed tapes. Other things didn't have his interest that much.
And his stinky feet were often an issue.
We lived here as roommates for a couple of years, Tijs had his bedroom at the front and I at the back of the upper floor.
It was a great time.
How was Tijs with the ladies? - He knew what he wanted and focused on that type of girls.
If he liked a girl he was really going for her, even if it took weeks or month. Doing everything to get her.
It's in his character. Dedicated and going for it.
It feels like I've been different kinds of persons in my life so far. The 16 year old Tijs was a totally different person then I am now.
In life you can change when things happen and you get older. I can't compare myself anymore with when I was a teenager.
When I look back I think what a stupid guy I was sometimes. I don't have any regrets though. I learned from my mistakes.
When I entered the club I immediately heard if Tiësto was playing. I still get goosebumps when I think of it.
The beat and flow of his music was different then our other dj's. It was more cheerful then the Belgian Beat, which was popular.
He took you on an adventure with his gigs. He swept you away.
Yesterday there were people with tune-boards. It was cool. - That string break was the best part.
What? - That string break in the middle.
This is a very emotional track. I made this track when a girlfriend broke up with me. I was very sad.
Your hart was broken? - Yes, listen to the sad strings.
The piano break symbolize my tears.
Metaphorical the piano gets more and more upset.
You here a small delay after it. - I think it's cool.
The first time I met Tijs was in Rotterdam. He worked in a music store where I bought my records.
I noticed that Tijs was the only one there who knew which records I could use. I was looking for melodic trance music.
How would you describe Tijs? - A passionate guy who knows what he wants.
When we worked together I was more the producer and he the DJ. He often suggested some adjustments.
He never changed that.
The first Innercity party I played at was in Amsterdam. Before that I already played in Israel and Norway.
I also had my own record label with mix compilations, Magik. At that time I felt, this is the moment.
Can it get any better then this? - I don't know, this is the best thing I experienced so far.
What a climax this is.
I was so happy, it also came on TV. A great exposure. I was sure that I would become a famous DJ in the Netherlands.
And then came the tears. - Yes I cried, it was such an emotional moment for me.
