The ULW program is the Utility Line Workers Program and it’s the first step to becoming
a Powerline Technician. This is our second program with the Unama’ki
as well as NSCC.
We have three organizations – Unama’ki Economic Benefit Office and Emera Utility
Services and Nova Scotia Power that are involved in a very unique program to address the labour
market needs in this province. It’s a perfect example of what industry,
a learning institution like NSCC and an economic development agency that represents First Nations
come together– great things can happen
So it’s a whole package for this ASEP training initiative under the Economic Benefits Office
and it’s proving very, very successful. And the industry partners think it adds great
value to them so they get very well-trained, professional, skilled workers for their workforce
If they had a need then we would work with them to develop a training program engaging
the partners right from the beginning, so you say ‘what skills are necessary for people
to be employed in that position’, and then ‘would you be willing to work with us to
develop a training program specifically to meet those needs’.
The whole course, the whole 8 months, all the training we did, all the pole work, all
the class room work – I love it.
[My highlight] When you see the success in the students, and their achievements, and
committing to the whole 30 week program and being here from start to finish and being
successful at it.
I loved it. I enjoyed coming, working with all my classmates and my instructors were
just a great help.
I’m glad I’m at the end and I made it, as a woman, and as a fellow ULW student.
These eight individuals, most of them from Eskasoni, he said they’re like astronauts
in our community. People in the community now are gaining a sense of hope and pride.
They never thought these individuals, individuals from their community, would be hired by a
large company like Emera.
They need to know that there are opportunities. They need to know that there is hope for them
for the future.
