Let's go now to Emily Pogatshnik for the weather news.
Thanks, Morgan. Here in the Weather Studio weve been taking a look at some severe
weather that moved through Kansas. Gove County, KS " Nearly two dozen tornadoes were reported
around Kansas " part of a rare November outbreak " spanned three states in Tornado Alley. " Kansas
logged 23 tornado reports in western sections of the state - many of them touching down
after sunset. " Significant damage occurred near Pampa, Texas. " 23 tornado reports in
Kansas 11-17 Goodland, KS " Parts of Kansas Interstate 70 was closed due to Blizzard conditions.
" There are many reports of motorists stranded in northwest Kansas due to the extreme snow
" winds gusting in excess of 50mph. " Travel in northwest Kansas was not recommended. " In
many areas, it was impossible to get through. " the snow Kansas left behind a band of up
to 15 inches of total snow. " Snow drifts several feet deep.
For those of you who enjoy winter, I have some great news for you. Winter is finally
here. Were going to take a look at how a couple of low pressure systems brought in
some colder air. There was a low pressure system here in the southern part of Minnesota,
and the fronts trailing off of this low pressure system is what caused the crazy weather in
Kansas. A second low pressure system developed in Southern Canada and began its way towards
that first system, bringing a lot of cold air with it due to this strong cold front.
The two low pressure systems merged together to create one very strong system. With the
two merged together, there were stronger winds in this part of the country. The winds were
so bad in North Dakota that a semi-truck was tipped over on the highway. As the low pressure
system began to retreat north, the cold front descended into the southern states bringing
a shot of cold air to them. Snow was associated with this system as well. With the added snow,
roads can become a little harder to travel on, so make sure you give yourself plenty
of time to reach your destination when traveling. Not everyone is as interested in weather as
meteorologists. Some people have other reasons for being in tune with it.
With winter just around the corner, most people look forward to snow, hot chocolate, or the
holidays. But others can expect something else with the cold weather.
Richard Galstad, Chiropractor "You'll have a lot of patients that do have arthritis come
in and they'll say "Geez the weather must be changing my knees ache" or "The weather
must be changing my neck hurts a little bit more now"
This increased arthritic pain from colder weather is unfortunate since arthritis can
be difficult to live with. Richard Galstad, Chiropractor "You're gonna
have a lot stiffness and pain in the joints anywhere from mild pain to severe pain, depends
on the type of arthritis." Galstad says that in turn causes stiffness
in the joints and then lack of mobility. He says there are ways to counteract the negative
effects of weather. Richard Galstad, Chiropractor "What people
can do is be aware of the weather and if it's going to be changing. Wear the proper clothing.
If you keep your joints warm, heat can generally help with arthritis."
Some people with arthritis say they know when changing weather is on the way.
Richard Galstad, Chiropractor "The experts state that there really isn't a lot of scientific
data to support peoples claims that they can predict the weather"
Regardless of whether or not they can predict the weather, people with arthritis can certainly
feel the weather. This is Mike Rauser, reporting for Studio One
There are more than 100 different types of arthritis affecting more than 50 million adults
and 300,000 children. And that brings us to our weather question
of the week: What day signifies the first day of Winter? Is it November 19th; November
26th; December 1st; or December 22nd? And Morgan, this day is also known as the Winter
Solstice, or the shortest day of the year.
Thanks Emily.
