That little Palomino over there is one that has the interesting story.
She's one of my fosters right now.
So this is Eliza,
and you can kind of see the dent in her forehead here,
which is the vet says basically looks like the corner of a two-by-four.
And when she came into the system,
she was starving and had been badly beaten.
We're pretty sure that she has some traumatic brain injury,
and so she has a hard time learning.
There.
She has a new hot pink bandage.
Now, she's learned a trick.
She will, using body language, back up into her stall.
You can do it. You can do it. Good girl.
Treating a sick or an injured horse, or training a horse
that has been rehabbed, so that it can get adopted,
and then watching them move on to another home --
it's just really gratifying.
And that's one of the reasons I love teaching MBA students.
Watching a student evolve in terms of their way of thinking
about the world and their way of thinking about business and their peers.
And I love having an influence on that.
I actually get the same kind of feeling I get
when I watch a horse graduate rehab.
One of my favorite days of the year is going to graduation
because I love to watch them finish up and move on to new stuff.
Students will fairly frequently come and want to talk about careers.
Just by asking somebody, "What really do you love to do?"
can be one of the most powerful questions in the world.
Their whole face changes. Their way of looking at the world changes.
Oh, you want a cookie? OK.
This is the way to her heart. Right here.
Oh, yes. Look at that.
People will very rarely remember what you say to them,
but they will always remember how you make them feel.
And if they feel like they're learning,
and they feel like they are making progress,
and if they feel like you respect them, they will make progress.
And, it's the same with a horse.
It's the same with a business colleague,
and it's the same with a student.
I kind of think I'm one of the luckiest people on Earth.
I have a career that I love,
but at the same time, the horses help keep me grounded.
Are you going to come? Are you going to come?
No? Yes? Okay. Come on.
I'm Kate Mackie. I foster rescue horses,
and I teach MBA students. Hook 'em.
