To define this, we have to think about natural aging--the biological clock, and I suppose lifestyle, exercise and good diet influences that.
What we see as the biggest impact on aging in terms of the appearance of our faces, is sun exposure.
The sun over many years, especially if you are fair-skinned will have an impact on the epidermis, the surface of the skin. It will change
how smooth the skin is, it will change the degree of pigmentation that you have, so you start developing brown spots.
They are often called liver spots or sun spots--they have nothing to do with the liver, but they are liver colored.
Then the ultraviolet light going deeper into the skin will collagen, which are these ribbons that will keep the dermis, middle part of
the skin together. They will affect elastin, this ground substance that gives bulk to the skin.
Also, as we age, there are things deeper down in the skin, the subcutaneous tissue, and our bones have effects that give us
loss of volume in the central face, things tend to sag from gravity-- jowls. So there's a general pulling down and thinning out of the skin.
