There is still a long way up. Come on everyone!
This is the first foot race in Rocinha. It is a very hard race.
There are a lot o people walking through out the firs kilometer,
which isn't even the worst part.
I think it's the first time in the history of this community
that so many people entered the ins and outs and the heart of Rocinha.
Two months ago, this would have been impossible.
The authorities say that Rocinha is now appeased.
The race is an attempt to prove that.
There are 70.000 people living here, in the biggest slum area in Latin America.
The event is crowded. There are more than 2.500 people registered.
The pacification process means a lot more than collecting guns, arresting criminals.
It's an attempt to rescue the citizenship of these people,
and we think that sport is the way to achieve that.
One thing is to come here as a policeman, armed, equipped, all armoured,
Carrying 35 Kilos of equipment on your body.
But to come back two months after like this, it's unique, it's historical.
The circuit has 10 kilometers, including some earth trails
that were totally prohibited before. Only the drug traffic used them.
This is very gratifying, because I would never know this path
if it wasn't for this event, because Rocinha is huge...
We wanted to do a very original circuit,
so the difficulties you find on the way, are the difficulties that people who live here find.
For me to get home, I climb like 300 steps everyday.
These are the worst stairs I have ever climbed in my life.
This coming from someone who climbed the Jaraguá Peak, who walked on the Great Wall of China,
but there is nothing like these stairs here.
When we drink water, we do it wildly. Look, you open it with the thumb.
Come on, come on. Rocinha is big, cheer up.
Now, thats a trail! Awesome, this trail is awesome.
This is what is complicated, you must look down, look at the ground.
At the same time, you have to know where you are going.
But when you take your eye off the ground you are finished, my friend.
Any mistake and you could hurt your foot, the race is over for you.
Oh my, lets see if you fall down the cliff, my friend.
I'm not going to jump; Im an old man.
Now, I'm off.
Hi, good morning!
This is one of the most difficult moments of Rocinhas race,
it's the Laboriô climb. We see a lot of wretchedness, a lot of poverty,
but there are some wonderful views too, like the one you are about to see.
Look at Rio de Janeiro!
Yeah! Awesome!
Now I'll speed up. I'll finish this thing.
I just won the hardest medal I ever conquered.
Its so awesome.
We this beard, everybody was calling me Santa Claus, Bin Laden...
