Rosemary Adams: I’m quite concerned about vandalism that is in the area. I’m a pensioner
and I have notices in the last ten days there has been two bus shelters totally vandalised
I don’t feel safe when it is dark going over ASDA to do shopping, so that stops me,
or I’ll leave it till the next day, I’m frightened.
I would like to know really what the police are doing about community policing; about
how us as a community can possibly stop some of this vandalism.
Dave Kirton – Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant: With regard to Mrs Adams question with regards
to vandalism of a bus stop, obviously we take this very seriously and are very proactive
with regards to anti social behaviours and the neighbourhood policing units have been
set up nationally to tackle these issues.
What we do need to know, we need information from the public, we need the information so
that we can act upon it. We work in partnership with the council and we meet every fortnight
we identify hotspot areas and we come up with strategies to deal with these issues and it
does work very, very well. But the crux of the problem is that we need to know what is
going on within the community so that we can act upon that information.
We have different ways of accessing the neighbourhood policing units. You can call into the offices
in the neighbourhoods, but what is up and running now on the Durham Constabulary website
is all the information with regards to the e-mail contact numbers office locations. Even
mug shot pictures of your own individual beat officer, the supervisors and the community
neighbourhood inspectors, so if you have got internet access have a look at the website
www.durham.police.uk there is up to date information on there, it will obviously tell you what
operations we have on and how we are tackling problems in your area so please access the
site if you can.
