Gwanghwamun is considered the heart of Seoul,... located in the center of the capital city...
and surrounded by embassies, government offices and royal palaces.
An annual art festival that honors its spirit just opened... and our cultural correspondent
Park Ji-won was there. This is Gwanghwamun Square, located in front of Gyeongbok Palace,
the main royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty.
It is a place for Seoulites and visitors to the city to spend time with their families
and friends.
The symbolic site has lent its name to a major international art festival that just opened
to the public at the Sejong Museum of Art.
The 9th Gwanghwamun International Art Festival features visual art works by artists ranging
from the young to the old.
Lim Man-sun,... an artist for over three decades of career,.. is participating in the fair
for the sixth time.
"The theme of my work is primitive people. I express the vitality and energy of primitive
people through my paintings, engravings and woodcuts."
About 130 works by artists from inside and outside the country are currently being displayed
at the museum, and the works will be changed out every week.
All together some 500 art pieces will be displayed throughout the month-long festival.
"Gwanghwamun is symbolically a center for Korea's fine arts. This festival keeps growing
and participating artists have now become so much more internationalized. It introduces
not only big artists but also talented rookies to Seoulites. I hope many citizens enjoy the
festival."
The festival will continue until May 27th.
Organizers plan to provide a diverse set of fine art programs to citizens during the period,...
including open-air events and programs for children at the Gwnaghwamun Square in mid-May.
