Alright, so today we’re going to learn how to go through your stance. In MMA, and pretty
much any sport, the most important thing that you do is your skill work. No matter how many
weights you do, no matter how much your run, and no matter how much you do of any of this
strength conditioning stuff, the most important thing is your skill work.
Where you start with your skill work is how you stand – and in MMA the main stance used
is the stance in boxing. In boxing the eyes are always facing the opponent, and your legs
depend on your handedness. If you’re left-handed, then your right leg goes forward. If you’re
right-handed, your left leg goes forward. Your front leg should be facing at about 45
degrees, and your shoulder facing towards your opponent, so that you can twist when
hitting him. You front hand should be right up by your cheekbone, and your back hand should
by down by your chin. You want to protect your chin as that’s where you’re most
vulnerable. Your leg position allows you to stabilise
yourself if someone pushes you or strikes you, so that you don’t fall down. I want
you to go in front of the mirror and work on those 45 degrees with the legs, and your
hands protecting your face – then practice going in and out of your stance, as once you’re
fighting and doing your thing you want to be able to get straight back into your stance.
That’s the most important thing, so that you’re ready to strike again, ready to grapple,
and ready to defend yourself if someone hits you – alright?
That’s it for this one guys.
