Hi guys! So, today we're going to be working on these the water spotted nails.
And, I got several requests over the last few weeks to do a water spotted
tutorial.
And ,honestly at first I had no clue what they were talking about, so I did a
search, and I watched the video by cutepolish,
and decided to give it a try myself.
So, for my base color I decided to go with a pink, purple, blue gradient; and if
you'd like to see how I did that and the spots
just stay tuned!
So, you can use whatever color you'd like for your base; I decided to use
some neon colors, so I'm starting off with a plain white base.
This is Orly - White Tips
and then I'm going to be using Orly - Skinny Dip, which is this neon blue,
and Orly - Beach Cruiser, which is this neon pink; and I'm going to be
using this makeup sponge to create a gradient effect
And, usually for sponging I use just an artist's sponge, but I happen to
have picked up some make-up sponges the other day,
and so I'm just going to use that for a change.
And
you know, there's a lot of different ways that you can sponge.
A lot of times I'llhave a piece of scratch paper, and I'll put some polish
out on that and dip the sponge.
Today I'm going to be applying the polish directly onto the sponge.
And
that will kind of make the gradient easier, you know, if you're intimidated
by trying to create the gradient yourself, this really almost does it right for you.
You can even overlap them more than that
on the sponge if you want. So I'm going to take that,
and
a little bit of an awkward angle here but i'm just going to
start sponging
on my nail.
And by going back and forth,
up and down a little bit,
it will start to show purple in the middle.
As with most sponging it'll take a couple coats to build that up,
so I'm just going to continue with the rest of my nails,
and
I'll fast-forward through that part.
I do want to just to mention
that I don't usually bother to tape around my fingers
when I was sponging,
but since I am going to be
dipping after this, I thought
that would help to make the clean up just a little bit easier.
So I'm going to continue on with that, and then i'll be back.
Alright,
so I'm all done with the sponging.
And it doesn't have to be
totally perfect. I mean, if you wanted you could certainly add a top coat and wear
this
as a manicure on its own, but since it is just going to be the base color for
my water spotted look
it doesn't have to be exact, because the color is just going to be peeking through.
So, you want to leave the tape on and then we're going to move on to the water
spotting.
Alright, I wanted to take just a minute before I get to the final part, and talk
about the products that I tried, and the product that I actually ended up
using.
In her video cutepolish uses a spray hand sanitizer,
and the brand is One Step.
Since it worked so well for her, I wanted to see if I could get that same brand,
but it turns out it's a Canadian brand, and it's not available around here.
So, at first I thought I would give it a try with just plain alcohol, since that's
the main ingredient in hand sanitizer and that's what I had on hand.
And, that created kind of a
textured, distressed look that I'll probably show in a future video,
but it didn't create the round spots.
So then I thought: Alright, I'll head out and I'll pick up some spray hand sanitizer;
how hard can that be to find?
Turns out, at least around here it's VERY difficult to find.
I was only able to find one,
this little pen sprayer from CVS.
And, when I gave that a try, it reacted almost too much in the water.
It blew up into a really huge circle instead of the smaller dots,
and I'm not sure if that's due to the formula, or due to they type of sprayer,
or why that happened; but
it wasn't going to work out for this design.
So, what I ended up doing is getting some regular hand sanitizer.
This is just the generic Walgreens brand,
and that's kind of a gel consistency.
It is actually
thin enough as a gel to spray, but you don't get a very fine mist.
So, what I did was stick some of it in this little spray bottle,
and then I thinned it out with some alcohol.
And that's what I ended up using in the video.
So,
if you can find a spray
go for it, give it a try - if you can't
you can go ahead and make your own.
I've seen some other people suggest trying with hairspray,
or body mist, or even polish remover
although that would not be really on my list to try.
As far as I'm concerned polish remover is just for removing polish, not for thinning out,
or doing designs or anything, but
it's not really going to hurt anything either if you want to try it.
But, it can take some trial and error and some experimentation, so if you're not
successful right away don't give up.
You know, a lot of you are probably interested in this look
after OPI had released their
Black Spotted Top Coat as a
French exclusive
and this option really does
pretty much duplicate that look.
And you can do it with whatever color combination you like.
Alright,
now for the cool part.
Just like with water marbling, I'm using a cup of room temperature filtered water.
And also like marbling, not all polishes work the same.
So, after some experimentation I decided to go with China Glaze - Liquid Leather,
and I'm using about six drops
to get a good, solid black,
and then the size of your spots
is going to be determined by how far away you are when you spray the sanitizer,
and how many times you spray the sanitizer. So,
there you see
I used about
three sprays
and each time it ads in a few more dots.
So,
it looks like I've got room here to dip two nails, so I'm going to go ahead and get
them lined up in there.
Then I'm going to just go ahead and dip
just like in a water marble.
If you need to blow on the surface to help the polish dry, you can go ahead
and do that.
Since you're not actually drawing a design it doesn't have as much time to dry on its
own.
And, once you have the surface all clear
you can go ahead and pull your fingers out.
And
there are the water spots.
So, if you guys would like to see some more pictures of this and other designs
you can check out my blog

If you give this a try, I'd love to see pictures on my Facebook Fan Page, and I
know I'll be trying it with some other color combinations, so if you guys would
like to see videos of that,
let me know it down in the comments below.
And as always -
thanks for watching =)
