are you a fan a stand-up comedy
are very into medium and reporter j brent
took some time to check out the long beach comedy scene
but you see that location
a group of comedy fans of plots the last comic of the evening at the gaslamp bar
and grill
all commerce stream before they have comic store the improv laugh factory
took many law beach comedians that ring begins in a place like like a narrows
internet cafe
which hosted open mic every tuesday at seven p_m_
long beach comic nick turturro
has stopped in for a warm-up set before he heads to the gas line
also on that gaslamp shelf
is another local funny man
ke scary
keys had a great set up a gas lamp and i caught up with a match reports euphemism
advantages of doing comedy in long beach versus being in los angeles proper
uh... called long beach is it's not a big competition that's out there equal
close-knit a community of comics you know i can get up and i have a lot of
guys tell me you know which work out how to get my stuff ready
for what they did it
the true love says the crowd of around a hundred gaslamp rolling
proving the old adage that practice makes perfect
i caught up with nick at the library coffeehouse on broadway in redondo
rehearse in open my come with sticks
i'll be here for a while you're running open mic here at the library coffeehouse
every wednesday night at eight p_m_
what is it you like about hosting and what is it a try to get the comics here
at the library that they were when i get my sandals
alway like about hosting especially housing of my kicked off
force you deal with it
quicker in between comics i want to be up there doing two and three minutes so
you start traffic a funny things to say instantly
just to carry the rumor
or whatever so on an island that it's kind of help to me
verses o off
uh... but i like about doing
a startling is that you could see a lot more
i know like i said a lot more comics doing a lot more time
so on i think over that that amount of time to cuz i'm getting eight
anywhere between eight to ten minutes or
fifteen if it's good to calm the comes from a long welcome
when you do that
you see
all more elaborates
and ste more experimental stuff
you know people talk about something else you're not just acquires which i
love pile of one-liners to but
he d_c_ people digging into something good morning experiment six it will take
place
so they had it look at the comedy c_n_n_ long beach
for more information on where to catch a show although you can perform hit me up

project x
contractor think about the trains party you've ever been to
and what white that bike ten
and now think about the party potentially destroying your house
spilling out
fifteen it history yet parent's worst nightmare cucumbers mansions eating
brown
and all of the contract with fans have amassed for even a medal for bravery
today that friend unopposed for popularity financial stuff until one
that the coaching laughter that got me on
wind dogs and plenty of a popular won't
housewife
that's what they can't control
any audience participation
i mean it felt like
you pretty much showed why do you attend parties that other people's houses some
of the year what he was with his action comedy in flight
romance not to mention the cam emily
shaking as i thought would be
project x definitely went up to a tight

is the other cc so program doing enough to serve students
our very own reporter maria velasquez and miguel gutierrez investigated
it's a rainy day here dot bcc so i decided to go and ask some students
how they feel about waiting for the shuttle buses during a rainy day
well it's raining it's pretty bad
is itself open
there's no
uh... covering out on and and and it's really even to gear early
so here pretty much stuck out in the rain
very funny is the child yes filled with not great
i think past incidents how they feel about a set above sort it says let see
what they have to say
sastry sneakers money too
like a lot of people that takes the bus soul
you know it's overcrowded and many others
really to class to go to the the campus
have you ever encountered any overcrowding
yes i have like five times
so do you think that i'll be cc should do in order to stop
and that there too
buses any
list of problems we
eat transportation those that don't have the we
to get to that a campuses
and the rain
kamon
delays we also asked the students if they knew that i'll be cc had more than
two buses how often the iran and if it has ever made them late for class
yet it's like to make it
and know that like in the morning it's every thirty minutes and i think our
action action might wiping he s costly any to so it's hard for him
ticket uh... to use the saddle waiter because the doesn't have a right back
writing i think everybody
because um...
they'll be two eighty four
and and don't have to keep people off
so uh... i'll happily kaliath
that's that sets an election
for them in
he can call us anytime soon
animated classic i mean trouble basis jokers that a class over there dominique
classes out of the year
an avocado beyond just a college student there's an too many students in with to
show that doesn't yet the way into the
become again
sixty off takes too much time
that might as well as to be a couple minutes late
for many students riding out in the rain is no big deal halverson to judge that
have to put up with waiting a long lines overcrowding and even ring
andrea last effort i need is
thank you maria
let's take a break and we'll be back with the continuation of our two
thousand twelve election coverage don't go away
welcome back to i_d_'s
our election two thousand twelve coverage continues today as our very own
michelle the core sat down with sewage alone tho let's take a look
hello u_s_ lake spotlight interview
elections two thousand twelve coverage with wanted if they're and council
member of the second district sigil on pof think they get so much for being
here innkeeper having me
so you started out your career
in the board of education in two thousand one tell me a little bit about
that's going to end it was a vacancy in two thousand and one is a special
election
as living in the downtown i was downtown resident
for seven years and downtown at the time and land tv on the scoreboard
and was reelected so i was on the school board for over five years
and at that point you transitioned and regret for city counsel but it was
kind of strange circumstances a special action what happened after that was a
special election as well the council america time halfway into the four-year
term
decided to resign and that created a vacancy the city held a special actions
the fast cycle when it's a special like snow we have six to seven weeks to run
for the sea
as opposed to those plans ones and a and i ran inserted ten other people so we
were eleven of us running who had seen
etc when you read for every election two years later because of the special
election it was only two years later the hatchery to run again for our adipose at
that time right sewing
ninety wonderful four-year cycle came out
for renewal reelection and no one file to run against me and so i stayed on has
been
presumptive reelected and
councilmember concern now is the first time
six years later and that were actually happening
an election with uh... women's
now you are running into people write estrogenic ballantine and i came here
how do you know
what's the strategy he put in place when you're an incumbent
you are at that vice mayor of long beach
and you have
too
you know new people was just no one knew because they they don't have maybe the
next name recognition yet they might someday
how do you run against them and um...
kick yourself fresh
for your constituents
depend and instill energetic gave me a job yet right the job doesn't stop so
as busy as we are as calphalon risen and there were five
things they need to do as vice mayors walla in terms of strategy i think it
has a public servant that's been serving the public officially in omaha most
eleven years
i'm just going to continue in that narrative i have a great public service
marinate
if we look at the record of service over just six years in council all of the
public policy initiatives that have been pounced and ate have borne fruits of
success all of those things i can t just convey that would present several ation
ship in these residents
uh... big part of my second district was also in my school board area so they
know me from my service in the school district dino me now and the thing about
local services it's very locals very personal to the public policy
initiatives that i've worked on the multi year ones especially the require
public scoping i'd choose to have public scoping in the beginning in order to be
sure that this is a direction that this district the city wants to go and so a
lot of these residents have had an opportunity to work on the initial
phases out any strategy but it's water quality or the downtown wendy's planner
the out bicycle mobility infrastructure all of those things people have no teeny
participating centers strategy i know
other than running an actual campaign and having email pieces out describing
the work that's been done
a lot of these specs now of the work and they have a relationship with the person
that's been in office
can you describe a little bit about is it your district has their unique
anything carrying
need redistricted sat small geographically unless you include the
poorest the court is in the second district a majority of the board is the
second district
but where we actually have residents of downtown you have the historic
neighborhoods about in the speech neighborhood
give rose park you craftsman village at the helm in area
we have carol part and so it's a great snapshot of the entire city
which makes it and wonderful platform t work on policies that are relevant
citywide
and includes several parts it is parked for in that it such a dent small area
and the coastline is included as a park is well which is a little unfair bag
we have half the past
bixby park we have rose park and carole park and smaller cuts and
well no about it
with band plastic bags and cartel
which i haven't
apparently left there's a little bit of controversy about that so cassie kind of
explain us
or about the longest baghdad
and then that some of the controversy that's come up about it
so it's been long beach plastic bag
tammy and we have no attacks on it what it is is it
we ban plastic bags at large grocery stores and have smaller stores that that
sal groceries
so not all stores i had to participate in the band that your
stegner grocery stores do
and target
certainly
um... end
fee that you pay if you find yourself at a store and you don't have a bag
that you brought in yourself a reusable bhagwan a purchase a paper bag ten-cent
it's not a tax
come we would never be able to impose a tax most voters voted on acutely issue
messages into controversy with the least right
it we look back historically too
every major behavioral change we've had to make
whether it's not smoking indoors
nokia restaurants not smoking in bars and all those things that wearing a seat
belt in the seventies when that became a mandate
all those things all those beeville changes we got pushed back people don't
like
to beat holds
what they can and cannot do u however is
as a city we'd wait
collected coming to our senses
what continues to happen is the degradation of our beach water quality
the degradation of our streets because in their is a
finley's plastic bags into korea sixty flight you know you get a little bit
late
flight so i can't believe that some other than they should
patient man and we find those friends
we need to talks apology on on marine life
you find this friends as making upgrade percentage uh... their daily intake
nutritional himself it's affecting so many
aspects of heart ecosystem
that to wait for an entire population say oh i can just behave better
just like smoking decided by the seat belt it was too much of a public
health cost this became too much of a public expenditure ten cents for tobacco
that goes to the grocery store or the mom and pop store every year paying back
print them too
replenished
feed that they have to pay for the bank is the type open since they didn't see
that any as he gets nothing
the ten cents goes to the store
boeing candidates there
we wish you the best senior editor i a anything paparazzi like you know i love
the city and i'm so happy to that
had the privilege of serving
presidency needs a lot lot eleven years and raising a family here and it's just
two great city someone and so i'm encouraged by people who run for office
whether they're running against me or or dope unseat and encouraged by that
because it demonstrates that
it's a great city the people that want to be involved so
i love that
well thank you for a buffer came here
if the council member state of vermont bowl and everybody's fight fair
uh... and this is michelle dot forthrightness
thanks michelle once they get going to be an interesting race
will be back with more election twenty twelve coverage right after this stating
got your text
shaikh three j
uh...
back
uh...
his state
details
clothing
interests creature it serves
welcome back time use
let's go to michelle from election to doesn't well coverage with her interview
with sanford con
today we welcome stamford conn as running for
congress in the forty seventh district welcome thank you for coming no prone
since we're so why did you decide to get in the race well iran twice before for
congress in the nineteen eighties against glen anderson
insert the issues tax issues of that time
len one vote for the whose he has a good guy ed today you'd be considered a
moderate democrat
but now we have an open seat because of redistricting and plus the issues are
far different today than there were in the nineteen eighties we have a debt
bond united states that we don't do something about it
is going to go off in this could impact standard of living and you can no longer
actuated prosperity the former doesn't work the same old same old isn't working
so i come from an economic business background i'm a small business owner
and i look at things differently than i feel that the other candidates so
now it's a time to run
sunny other republicans in the race are carried along and steep hike and all
as of today has a terrific today we'll win things could change op how do you
see yourself as different from too long and hike and our greg and all has a you
know kirker was a former a congressman right along as well respected in long
beach as a republican
city council and what kind and loving
differentiate yourself rhino both these people who have been on stage with
especially stephen in the long time ago when it was a congressman
upholstered in syria
there's a difference
between uh... myself in them
is that when i they'd talk they talk about who's endorsing them
generalities of what they stand for which is nice
but they don't get into any details like
taxes
uh... education
increasing world but billing united states with the latest technology
they just talking generalities today and this is same old same old i have all
these endorsements right here this is my background
well again that's nice to be wrong i would say it's nice
where we are now in this country it's not about that anymore that much
if things are going great that it would be
what it's about now as ideas of where you see the future of this country going
and that's where i'm coming from son a ride is what what would you stay is the
most important
um... thing you'd like to encompass compass if you were elected congress of
the two most important things to me
as i told one of the incidents that near room
and has only one exit he had some n_f_l_ players guarding that exit and saying
sanford you're not going to leah's room until you tell us that
two most important things that you feel strongly about
whether it be the coverage of the night it is and
different one person as a promise too much
but the two most important things it feels strongly about
are to me
a flat rate income tax that between fifteen to seventeen percent
with a large standard deduction
for those that are at or below the poverty line is that i'm paying a fairly
that's that would be indexed to inflation
outside of that let's say sixty percent fifteen to seventeen but say sixteen
anything above that
sixty percent
warren buffett
anybody anything about that they all pay sixty percent
nobody has a special rate
the second one
is for education
education we've been throwing money at education education doesn't need more
money you will not reform the bureaucracy
the educational career c
by throwing money at it
education needs competition
i strongly support
vouchers
where guardians of children or parents and guardians legal guardians of
children
have the right should have the right to pick where they want to send their kids
either
at or parochial school
they have they should have the right they know what's best for the kid
they should have that right to decide it's their money anyway sister tax money
government doesn't
create money out of thin air and ice
there's no government in the near on the brink presses but still it's their money
they should have that right to send kids and with competition using major changes
educational now respond to the market
and how do you reach out here a long beach guy how do you reach out to orange
county
as white spending a lot of time in orange ca
uh... what do you do how do you get out there and are you unit
chamber of commerce is
other meetings you get invited to clubs organizations they call the registrar
voters in orange county
they have my number in my email address
and they invite me plus some unique advertising undoing
which right now is sort of confidential 'cause strategy
but it is fairly
other any others his a feel strongly about
besides those to the issues is uh... i want
to make opec irrelevant for this country
in that one increased domestic
using the latest safeguards uh... environmental safeguards what good is it
the did increase or domestic production
excuse me
if u poison your water does nothing accomplished nothing
but i don't want us to be depended on the middle piece that all we haven't on
them
fund and save energy here
including natural gas i'd like to see
a lot of that's gonna happen no matter what because of disparity in prices
between actual guessing gasoline
that a lot of cars and trucks are going to convert
minutes he is in mass financial bs
the r_t_c_ and long beach i see it all the time
with natural gas uh... bosses here
and also in los angeles there's a lot of natural gas buses running a lot of the
pick up trash trucks now are natural gas driven
uh... so i'd like to see that another thing i'd like to see is
the inheritance tax otherwise known as the death
eliminated people work all their lives the buildup in the state they already
pay taxes on that sometimes mobile times
that's their money to pass on to their there's no children grandchildren
whatever
and should stay in the private sector it should not be sucked away by government
to be spent on
so andrea's and who knows what other pet project any administration democrat a
republican and democrat republican ministrations of them into george w bush
has done it
they all do it
maybe one dozen toward another but who cares
that should stay in the private sector goin to do with this
well thank you so much main with us today we thank you c_n_n_'s anthony chip
afrikan
