Books are an extremely useful resource for academic research. Unlike articles or websites,
books provide a thorough look at a particular subject and often include background information,
detailed analysis, and lists of additional resources on the topic.
You can find books at Wardman Library by going to our website and selecting "Find Books and
Articles" and then selecting "Library Catalog." Or you simply type library.whittier.edu into
your web browser.
From here, you can begin searching our collection of books, ebooks, and DVDs by typing keywords
directly into the search box.
For example, let's say I'm searching for books on California history. I can type "California
history" into the search box and select "Submit." The results that appear include any item that
contains both the words "California" and "history" somewhere in the record. If I select one of
the search results, the Library Catalog will highlight where it's located those words in
the books title or description.
Be aware that the library catalog only searches the summary information for each book, or
the bibliographic record, and not the entire contents of the book.
If you find something relevant to your research, you can use the subject headings to find additional
books on that topic. For example, here we are able to find the 12 other books with that
same subject heading, California Ethnic Relations.
For physical books, use the Call Number to locate the item in the library. Ask a librarian
or a student worker if you need help finding the book on the shelf.
For ebooks, simply click on the "Links" button to access the Full-Text in our EbscoHost ebook
database.
For more complex and effecient searching, use the Advanced Search option. Here, you
can string keywords together and use the search limiters to specify the type of material you
are looking for. For example, here I am looking for information on California history, minorities,
and limiting my results to only items that are DVDs.
Take a look at some of the tips that are here on the right hand side for additional help
on how to use search more effectively.
If an item is checked out, a date will appear under the "Status" column. Otherwise, the
item should be available.
As always, if you need additional help finding books at Wardman Library or using books in
your research, please don't hesitate to contact a librarian.
