Hi, my name is Craig and I’m the Director of Marketing and Business Development here
at PrintingForLess.com.
For our first piece in the “Featured Design Series” we’d like to take a brief moment
to give you a few ideas for your next brochure printing project by highlight a few of the
professional design and printing effects that were used to make this brochure remarkable.
Let’s take a brief look at this President Lincoln brochure designed to highlight the
150th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s first inauguration and to educate youth on
the meaning of the new designs on the back of four commemorative pennies minted in 2009.
Spot varnish vs. clear foil stamping
Ever want to know the difference between using a spot varnish and clear foil for your brochure?
Want to see a great use of foil printing?
People often ask printers, "Why not use a less expensive clear varnish instead of a
clear foil?" From experience we've learned that the foil stands out a lot more than spot
varnish, and customers can see the two side-by-side. They almost always prefer clear foil. It’s
clear to see on this piece, since both a clear varnish and clear foil stamping are used on
the same brochure and can be easily compared.
To tie in the brochure with the penny, copper foil stamping was used.
Lincoln’s face was printed with a copper metallic ink to add warmth and further tie
in the piece with the penny.
On the inside of the brochure, clear foil stamping was used to highlight the stars on
the American flag and the Lincoln monument.
On the back of the brochure, clear foil stamping was again used, and a special ink was mixed
by our press manager to highlight the outline of the penny and to give the penny a 3-D effect.
Let’s take a look at the Kluge press and see how the effects on a brochure like this
are made. The foil stamping effects were created on
a Kluge press. In addition to foil stamping, we also use the Kluge press for die cutting
and embossing. Due to the use of advanced design effects,
It took us 9 press runs to print this brochure.
In addition to the foil stamping and embossing, our press manager mixed a special ink to highlight
the edge of the penny on the back of this brochure.
By the way, this brochure was done without using any Pantone colors.
