Listen to elderly people, but don't let them influence you too much,
mistakes are a part of the learning process,
don't give up when a mistake happens,
and be accurate, always be accurate.
My name is Bernhard Schelberger and I am supervising welder.
In the welding process,
warpage develops as a result of the heat,
and being able to handle this warpage,
that at the end the required part is accurately produced,
that is the challenge and that is the coolest thing about my job.
Especially in summer, we need to wear our complete working clothes,
we cannot just undress and work in a t-shirt,
because of the ultraviolet radiation that causes sunburn,
welding can be a possible cause of skin cancer,
it is very hot in summer and we also wear the welding helmet.
The company Rosenbauer produces firefighting vehicles,
and is active in the area of vehicle manufacturing,
and my job as supervising welder is
to supervise the whole welding process,
that is including the people, the machines, the materials,
and all of the technical welding requirements.
I divide the work among the staff members,
then welding plans are possibly constructed,
in order to correctly adjust the weld joint and weld current,
the final inspection is also among my responsibilities,
as well as dealing with claims, here I am often consulting the technician,
we determine the position of the weld joint,
the machines are adjusted, potential errors are eliminated in advance,
of course I also need to manage the spare welding parts for the machines,
sometimes I also need to do small repairs myself,
and, as mentioned before, I need to supervise the adjustment of the welding machines,
as well as the final inspection.
I work in a team of 5 welders,
and I am the only supervising person.
I was born here in St. Pölten,
attended primary and secondary school,
after that I did an apprenticeship for an automobile supplier,
after my apprenticeship I was hired into the maintenance staff,
that was maintenance in an iron foundry.
That was not a very clean job,
in maintenance you never see anything new,
you only repair, in order to keep things running,
and that was not very satisfying for me,
and that's why I said I want to go somewhere else,
and eventually came to the company Rosenbauer in the year 1991,
by now I have been working here for almost 23 years,
after a few years I became foreman for machine engineering,
after the next couple of years I thought,
actually my boss asked me, what I thought of supervising the welding department,
and I thought this could be a good first step
towards becoming welding foreman, so I became welding foreman as well,
and since 11 years now I am working here as supervising welder.
It would not be possible without my educational background,
the education as welding foreman is very much focused on how to handle the materials,
and without that it is not possible.
The characteristics which you should have are
perseverance and accuracy.
