>> NARRATOR: The class of 2015 has had a constructive beginning to the new school year. During a
three-day orientation the incoming students built towers and participated in several activities
designed to introduce classmembers to the College of Veterinary Medicine and to each
other.
>> BILLY COLE: Today, we sort of did some ice-breaking, team-building activities, sort
of learn where everyone is from, learn some people’s names, some strategy planning and
then building towers of cardboard boxes and duct tape, which was entertaining . . . Our
group wasn’t all that successful but we at least had a good time and got to know each
other.
>> AMANDA BROWN: Talking to people from Rhode Island, or Oklahoma, or Connecticut has been
really, a really cool experience because they have a lot different backgrounds that I do,
being from Kansas, coming to Kansas State, so it’s been really fun.
>> Orientation opened on August 17 with a welcome session for students and family that
included greetings from administrators.
>> DR. ELMORE: This is a new educational experience for each of these students, they’ve never
attended veterinary school before so orientation is all about helping them get a good start,
helping them to learn about the ins and outs of going to veterinary school . . . and just
become very familiar with our environment here at the College of Veterinary Medicine.
>> The inclusion of family and friends was an important element of the orientation.
>> DR. ELMORE: While the students are learning about all the logistics of getting into this
program and the expectations, the parents, families and friends are in another session
learning about what their students are going to be experiencing. We think it’s extremely
helpful for our families and friends to know what their veterinary student is going through
so they can be most supportive.
>> Orientation activities included an all-college picnic, a veterinary-student-club fair and
tours of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Overall, students said they really appreciated
these events.
>> KELSEY BRADLEY: We’ve gotten to mess around with our computers a little bit and
get to see the syllabi from different classes and some of it’s a little intimidating,
but I’m excited.
>> SABRA ORTEGA: I have to say that I’m glad that they do it because walking in here
and being blinded to the whole experience and having the usual nerves, it’s helped
to make me feel more comfortable and I feel like they really, genuinely care about us
as students and they want us to do well, and it’s fun to see that they want to help.
>> While orientation provided a useful introduction to the college, the students said they were
eager to begin their veterinary education.
>> AMANDA BROWN: Well, yesterday morning, I was really nervous and, you know, the excitement
has just been building since then and I’m very, very excited and ready to start.
>> ALYSON POST: I’m very ready to get things going and, you know, I think most of us have
been working towards this for a long time, so I think we’re all really ready to just
get going.
