JOE HENRIQUES: Today, I'd like to talk about you
against all Gods.
Now, I'm sure that you don't wake up in the
morning thinking to yourself, well, today, I'm
going to be against all the gods of my day.
No. But the Psalmist who wrote Psalm 29 was thinking
that. He starts out his Psalm by saying this.
"Ascribe to the Lord, you mighty ones, ascribe to
the Lord the glory and strength due to His name."
Now, that little phrase, mighty ones, is translated
sons of gods.
What was he referring to?
He was referring to the beings that the people
foolishly thought were deities.
We know for a fact that he was specifically targeting
the Canaanite god Baal who had this power in
thunderstorms.
So all throughout Psalm 29, you'll see references
to the voice of the Lord in the thunder.
All of his writings about nature always refer to the
voice of the Lord. And he was saying, you know, Baal isn't the God
that you should be worshiping. It's Jehovah God.
Does this happen in the New Testament as well? Yes.
You know, when the Paul -- when Paul speaks about the
Lord Jesus, he uses the title, Lord.
Well, it wasn't just a carryover from the Old
Testament, as important as that was.
He was really speaking to the people of his day,
many of whom considered Caesar to be Lord and
Caesar to be a deity.
So Paul was essentially saying, you know, you're
forced to bow down to Caesar, but someday, Cesar
himself will bow his knee before the Lord Jesus and
confess him as the Lord.
Now, I know that you and I don't go about talking to
people in this way in our day.
But you do -- but you do talk to them.
And I just want to encourage you, as you talk
to people about the true God, our Lord Jesus Christ,
reason with them with dialogue.
Read Acts 17.
See how Paul spoke to them in a reasonable fashion
about how Jesus is the Christ that the Father had
sent.
And not only that, but do good works in Jesus' name.
You know, the Emperor Julian in about the year
360 complained that these Galileans, is what he
called Christians, are showing to everyone that
they not only care for their own poor, but they
care about our own poor better than we do.
So as you go about your day and the Lord gives you
the opportunity to speak to people about the true
God, speak to them with good works and with good
words.
Let me offer a prayer for us.
Our Father, we want to thank you so much that you are
the true God, and you've helped us to know yourself
through Christ.
Help each one of us, Lord, to worship you by sharing
with other people the truth of who you are, and
thank you for answering us in Jesus' name. Amen.
