4.5a: Introduction to percents - convert percents and decimals
Percent literally means per 100.
So to convert a decimal to a percent,
we need to multiply it by 100
or we can move the decimal twice to the right.
Next, to convert a percent to a decimal,
we will need to divide by 100.
Seeing as the word percent means per
or divide by 100
or we can also move the decimal twice to the left.
In this first example,
we have a number that needs to be converted to a percent.
Remember to convert to a percent,
we will be multiplying by 100,
which means we have 0.582 x 100,
the answer we get is 58.2%.
Remember that when converting to a percent,
you must write the percent symbol.
Also, you can simply just do the second option
which is move it twice to the right.
Moving twice to the right, you will then put the decimal after the 8.
As you can see, you would get the same answer.
In example 2, we are doing this process backwards.
We now have a percent that we would like to convert to a decimal.
Remember converting to a decimal means that we must divide by 100.
A 145.6 to change it into its decimal form
or essentially to drop the percent off,
you write per 100 or per cent.
When we divide we get 1.456.
Remember with decimals, they do not have percent symbols.
Also, when changing from a percent to a decimal,
you may also move the decimal two places to the left.
Placing it between the 1 and 4
would give us the same answer, 1.456.
