- I'm back in my hometown of Chicago.
I'm off to a suburb called Richton Park,
which is 35 minutes south of the city.
The median income is $60,000.
I'm here to help Julian and Erika Singleton.
- Whoa!
Give me that ball back.
I'm Erika Singleton,
and this is my husband, Julian Singleton.
We've been married for five years.
- We have two children, Ashley, who's ten,
and Taylor, who's four.
- I want you to pick me up.
- We met at my friend's birthday party.
The birthday cake came around, and he looked at me,
and I was like, "Would you like some?"
So I fed him with my fork,
and that's when the magic happened.
- I was like, "Wow, she's damn pretty."
I don't know what I would do without Erika.
She's a very, very driven young lady.
- Two years ago, I lost 150 pounds,
so when you come from Big Bertha to Little Erika,
yeah, I'm shopping, I'm enjoying myself.
If you see a package coming, just put it to the side for me.
That's my guilty pleasure.
Do I sometimes overdo it?
Yes.
- Sometimes I just look at her and shake my head,
like, "Did you actually need that?"
- I am a social worker.
So how are you?
I work a regular 9:00 to 5:00.
He works nights.
- Erika, I'm off to work.
I'm a supervisor with the United States Postal Service.
All right. - Adios.
He gets a little bit more of a salary
by working that shift.
- Make sure you lock the door.
- But we do not see each other at all,
and there are moments where I feel like
I am a single mother.
Who's ready for dinner?
When Julian gets stressed out over money...
Where you going? - To watch the game.
- He'll just back out.
He'll shut down.
There is no financial communication
between him and I.
Before moving here to our home, we were living
on the south side of Chicago rent free,
because it was my grandmother's building.
That was a blessing, not having to pay rent.
However, there was too much violence in the area.
- A young man was gunned down
a few doors from where we were living,
and we heard the gunshots, and they were shooting
over the top of the car with the kids in it.
- We began to live in fear in our own home.
- So that's what led us to moving out to the suburbs,
where I feel is safer for my family to grow.
When we moved here, within two weeks,
I just seen money just disappearing
really, really quick.
Most of these are unopened bills.
Now we have household bills,
like lights, gas, water, garbage.
We didn't have to pay those bills before.
Now we're in the hole every month.
So I've maxed out four credit cards.
- If we don't get the help now,
we might not be able to keep the house in Richton Park.
- That what really scares me, going back.
My children's lives are at stake.
My wife's life is at stake.
Going back would just break my heart.
