[VARIOUS VOICES - Musical chord]
YOUNG WOMAN #1: He’s my academic supervisor, so
what can I do? He’s really popular. Who am I? Nobody. When I’m with other people
his behaviour is completely different. But when we’re alone …
YOUNG MAN #1: Look, I’m not even out to my closest friends or my parents. I thought
I’d try and keep things quiet for a bit and work things out in my head. But there’s
this guy in some of my lectures … he just goes on and on about it. I asked him to quit,
but that made it worse. Every time I see him with his mates they’re all mouthing the
word … ***. (PAUSE) I’m over it.
YOUNG MAN #2 (OFF-LENS): When I first met her I thought ‘Cool, something might happen’,
but it came to nothing. Then she started messaging me. Then she started emailing me photos of
herself. And she calls me up in the middle of the night, then hangs up.
YOUNG WOMAN #2 (OFF-LENS): I couldn’t believe it. I was just joking with her. It was meant
to be funny. Okay? Other people laughed, why not her? Now she’s complained! (PAUSE) It
was a joke. She should just... get a life!
YOUNG MAN #3 (OFF-LENS) (DOWNCAST) It was at a party after an exam.
I was pretty smashed. I’m not proud of what I did. (PAUSE) It’s not who I am. But now
I’m going to court. It’s going to affect the rest of my life.
[Music]
Harassment…
It can be ***;
It could be bullying…
It could be sexist, racist, homophobic, or about religion
It’s always unwanted; It’s always abusive …
It’s always arrogant; It’s always unlawful…
And it’s not tolerated at UTS, by anyone, anywhere, anytime
If it happens to you, report it.
If you’re doing it, stop.
Think about it.
Change your mind-set.
Do yourself a favour.
Harassment can be intimidating and difficult to deal with. But you can do something about
it. If you need assistance, contact the UTS Equity and Diversity Unit. There are people
there to help you.
[Music reaches a crescendo and fades.]
