bjbj The nine blue pieces that you see in front of you are part of a tableware set that
was designed in 1916 by the Viennese architect Joseph Hoffman. Hoffman was a member of an
artist group called the Vienna Secession, and they were involved in not only making
items for tables, but also designing entire interiors. Their most famous design for an
interior was probably die Fledermaus caf , which means the Bat in English, and for this caf
, they designed not only the glassware, but also the furniture and interior colors of
the caf . Joseph Hoffman is one of the early practitioners of a style that we call Modernism,
and what are some of the things that define modernism? When you look at this glass, think
to yourself, What is it that you see? You see simple blown forms, with almost no decoration,
very spare, clean lines, very functional; they re still pleasing to the eye. They are
designed, and even some of the pieces such as the footed vase in the back have shapes
that remind you maybe of a flower; but really, the shapes are very clean, very geometric
almost, and this is what became very typical, or characteristic, of the Modernist style.
Decorative arts of the 20th century are mostly characterized by Modernism. We can say that
that is the design that has dominated the century, and here you see a very early example
of it. The nine blue pieces that you see in front of you are part of a tableware set that
