>> ANNOUNCER: Cops is filmed on location with the men and women of law enforcement.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
>> OFFICER MARC SULLIVAN: Boston is a city full of history.
We're actually the first police department in the country.
So we have a lot of stuff in the city which creates different situations for us downtown.
In the Youth Violence Strike Force, we identify people who are involved in gang activity,
and our count is the most violent crime in the city.
We try to identify the kids that are most active in the shootings, the stabbings and the
violent crime in the city, and we do many different tactics to try to take those kids off
the street.
>> OFFICER JOSEPH MARRERO: On that note, this particular area over here, we had a cop get shot
before.
We got different gang members coming down trying to claim the territory of this area over
here.
It's pretty hot.
So, we're probably going to find something over here.
That's, that's exactly why we're here, over here today.
Because we know we're going to find something up here.
Look right there-- two.
>> SULLIVAN: Yep, there he goes.
(siren blaring) >> MARRERO: Right here.
Right there, right there.
Come here.
Turn around.
Turn around.
Turn around.
What do you got in your mouth?
>> Nothing, nothing, man, I swear to God.
>> MARRERO: Turn around.
>> I swear to God, I ain't got nothing.
>> MARRERO: I want you to put your hands behind your back for me right now, all right?
Put your hands behind your back.
>> I swear to God, I didn't do nothing.
>> MARRERO: Give me your other hand.
>> No, no.
>> MARRERO: If you ain't got nothing on you, man, you'll be free to go.
>> MARRERO: Who got it?
>> I ain't got it.
That was dude was asking me to buy nothing.
He told me to take it down there.
I didn't buy nothing, man.
I'm totally clean.
So I ain't did nothing wrong, man.
>> SULLIVAN: Why, why'd you run then?
You didn't run?
Or you did run?
>> What I did though?
>> SULLIVAN: Did you run from a policeman when you saw I was coming?
What, do you have two pairs of pants on?
>> No, I got one pair of pants.
>> SULLIVAN: Where's that knife then?
>> What knife?
>> SULLIVAN: Is this a knife in here?
>> MARRERO: We got some product?
We got something here.
What do we got here?
What's this?
What is it?
>> I don't know what it is.
>> MARRERO: You don't know what it is?
>> No, I have no idea what it is.
>> MARRERO: Oh, okay.
Back up, man.
Aluminum foil?
>> Yeah.
>> MARRERO: Come over here.
Have a seat right here.
So how much were you looking to buy off him?
Where did he have it at?
>> I don't know.
>> MARRERO: Where'd he put it?
>> I don't know.
He just took off.
>> MARRERO: You better start speaking, man.
Because I'm going to be honest with you.
I will lock you up for having this drug paraphernalia on you.
>> Dude, I don't know where he had it hidden.
He just took off.
>> MARRERO: How many did he have on him?
>> Two.
>> MARRERO: He had two bumps on him?
>> Yeah.
>> MARRERO: We're talking about crack, right?
>> Yeah.
>> MARRERO: That guy just bit it, is what he did.
He bit it and swallowed it.
That what you did?
>> No, man.
No, that ain't from me, man.
>> MARRERO: All right.
>> SULLIVAN: He drop anything?
>> MARRERO: No, there was a bag there that was half bitten off.
That was bitten off.
>> SULLIVAN: He swallow it?
>> MARRERO: Yeah.
He said he tried to sell him a few bumps back there in the alley.
>> SULLIVAN: Where'd he get it from?
I know, but where did he get it?
>> MARRERO: He didn't say.
He said he just had it in his hand.
>> SULLIVAN: I'm going to take a quick look.
>> MARRERO: You want to run this for me?
>> SULLIVAN: Yeah.
They were in the middle of a drug transaction when we rolled up on him.
The guy all in black was going to serve up the white guy.
They saw us and took off running.
The white guy is saying the other gentleman had a bunch of crack *** in his hand, so
I'm trying to see if he threw it somewhere.
Very hard to find.
I think they're right here.
Found it.

>> MARRERO: Let me tell you something.
Don't take nothing personal, man.
I don't knock a man for doing what he's got to do.
You know what I'm saying?
I don't knock a man for doing what he's got to do, but I don't like being lied to.
>> I ain't lied to you.
>> MARRERO: All right, I'm just letting you know, man.

>> MARRERO: You got them?
>> SULLIVAN: Yeah.
>> MARRERO: Give me the other hand.
>> What you got, sir?
>> SULLIVAN: We'll tell you in a sec, okay?
>> MARRERO: This is for our safety, man.
We want to make sure you ain't running, because you already ran once.
We ain't trying to chase you again.
>> I'm saying, but I ain't had nothing on me, man.
>> MARRERO: That's okay, man.
We're not a judge.
You could explain that to the judge.
The judge will let you know.
When was the last time you was locked up?
>> I just got out of jail.
>> MARRERO: For what?
>> I was up there for assault and battery.
>> MARRERO: You ever been arrested for selling crack before?
>> Nope.
>> MARRERO: Because you know we're going to know.
Now we know everything.
>> I don't sell crack.
>> MARRERO: Did you ever get arrested for selling crack before?
>> Yeah, for fake drugs.
But I don't sell crack, though.
>> MARRERO: Okay.
The drugs you got today, were those fake?
>> I ain't had no drugs.
Seriously, I didn't.
>> SULLIVAN: Where did you meet him?
>> I was just walking down here and he came out the alleyway.
>> SULLIVAN: He met you in the alleyway?
Did he approach you?
>> No, I was walking here.
He approached me.
>> SULLIVAN: What did he say?
"You looking?" >> He says, "Come here."
Then I went down there in the alley with him.
>> SULLIVAN: Yeah?
>> And then he said he had a couple of 40s.
>> SULLIVAN: A couple of 40s?
>> I told him I didn't want it.
>> SULLIVAN: And it's that guy right there, right?
In the back seat?
>> Yeah.
>> SULLIVAN: Where did he get it from?
Did he have it in his hand the whole time?
Did he get them out of his mouth?
>> I don't know where he got them from.
>> SULLIVAN: So when you saw us coming down the street, he just tell you to take off?
>> He just said, "Run. Cops."
He went on ahead of me, and I took off up the alleyway.
>> MARRERO: You're going to jail for this, okay?
>> For what?
>> MARRERO: For possession of crack *** with intent to distribute.
>> Crack ***?
>> MARRERO: I know, it's crazy, isn't it?
>> How you going to charge me with possession of ***?
>> MARRERO: Because of statements on scene.
I can.
I can.
Tell the judge tomorrow.
Don't talk to me.
Remain silent.
Talk to the judge, okay?
>> MARRERO: Give me one second.
>> (bleep) >> MARRERO: You understand why I grabbed you in the corner over
here right, the way I did?
>> No, because you thought I had something?
>> MARRERO: Because I thought that you had something in your mouth and I didn't know what you
had in your mouth.
And often they, you put it in there to swallow it up.
So I wasn't sure if you had it or you didn't.
So I was just making sure that you didn't.
All right?
>> MARRERO: No hard feelings?
>> No.
>> MARRERO: All right, man, get up.
I'll take those cuffs off you, all right?
Consider this a break for you, man.
>> OFFICER DAVID COUTURE: Most of the feedback you get is mostly people concerned with the
community.
You know, policing, you don't solve your own crimes.
Your concerned citizens, they're the first on scene.
They're the ones that give us the information that brings us to solving crimes.
I think after September 11, people actually realized that we're not out here just to shake
people down and give people a hard time.
So I think they get more involved with helping the police departments.
It's going to be a van.
The caller reported that they were throwing beer bottles from their car to their car.
It's headed up towards Tyngsborough, which is another town.
Try to stop it before it gets out of our town.
>> He just went up behind Brunswick.
He smashed my car with a beer bottle.
>> He just took a left here.
>> COUTURE: All right.
Car 11 is off with that vehicle behind Brunswick.
>> (over radio): Proceed Car 11.
>> COUTURE: Hey, guys, come here.
Get over there by the van.
>> COUTURE: 11 alone, why don't you slide me another unit, please?
Put your hands on the car, please, both of you.
>> (over radio): Unit 6 is on the way.
>> COUTURE: Put your hands on the car, right now.
You guys got anything bad on you?
>> No, sir.
>> (over radio): 1104.
Go ahead.
>> COUTURE: You guys have a problem with somebody in traffic?
>> No.
>> COUTURE: You didn't?
>> No.
>> COUTURE: No?
That guy didn't see you for no reason?
Why don't you tell me what happened?
You on probation?
>> Yes, sir.
>> COUTURE: For what?
>> Uh, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, sir.
>> COUTURE: Really?
>> Yes, sir.
>> COUTURE: So why don't you tell me what happened?
>> What happened, sir?
>> COUTURE: Who threw the bottle?
>> No idea, sir.
>> COUTURE: You have no idea?
Anything in this car I'm going to find before I rip through it?
>> There's a broken piece up above the driver's seat.
>> COUTURE: A broken piece of what?
>> Of a bowl.
Well, no, it's a bowl, but it's broken.
Up top.
>> COUTURE: A bowl?
>> Yeah.
>> COUTURE: All right, is there any drugs in the car?
>> No, there's not, sir.
Not to my knowledge and there shouldn't be.
>> COUTURE: Whose is this?
Is this your van?
>> It's my van, yes, sir.
>> COUTURE: So come here a minute.
So what happened?
>> We were driving down the street and these people flipped us off.
We took a turn.
They started following us.
>> COUTURE: Okay, what else happened?
Nothing else?
>> No.
>> COUTURE: All right.
So no other witnesses we have over there are not going to tell us a different story?
I'm just giving you a chance to tell your story right now.
What happened?
Who threw the bottle?
Who threw the bottle out of the car?
>> I did not throw the bottle, sir.
>> COUTURE: You did not personally throw the bottle?
So who threw it?
>> I'm not sure.
>> COUTURE: You're not sure.
So you just had a confrontation with them and they supposedly flipped you off, so someone in
your vehicle decided to throw a bottle out at their car?
>> Yes, sir.
>> COUTURE: So basically in a roundabout way you're telling me that your passenger did it?
Is that what you're trying to tell me?
Just be straight up with me.
I mean, seriously, you're already caught.
We already got you.
We're not here...
we didn't come here out of nowhere.
We didn't get here for no reason.
Obviously, we got here because something happened, okay?
>> Right.
>> COUTURE: So how long have you known him?
>> Three years.
>> COUTURE: Three years?
Good buddy of yours?
You saying you just don't want to rat him out, basically?
>> Yes, sir.
>> COUTURE: All right, why don't you go back over there.
I'm going to see if he has a different story.
Come here.
Okay, so you threw the bottle.
Why'd you throw the bottle?
>> Because I'm stupid.
I don't know.
>> COUTURE: Just because someone flipped you off?
>> Yes, sir.
>> COUTURE: All right, so what do you think could have happened if you hooked that bottle and
they crashed?
>> I didn't.
I wasn't aiming at them, sir.
>> COUTURE: It doesn't matter.
You threw the bottle.
That's what the bottom line is.
Get back over there.
I'm going to go talk to them and then...
>> COUTURE: How you doing?
You guys want to get out of your car for a minute?
>> Sure.
>> COUTURE: Where'd the bottle hit your car?
>> In the back somewhere.
>> COUTURE: In the back?
Any damage?
>> Probably just scratches, that's about it.
>> COUTURE: All right, what exactly...
Tell me exactly what happened?
>> I was coming down Broadway Street, just driving, you know, probably 30, because it's, you
know, you can't come down that fast.
He come flying up behind me and he's screaming out the window, "(bleep)."
>> COUTURE: Which one was screaming?
>> The driver.
>> COUTURE: The driver?
>> "(bleep)."
He's going like this with his hands, and I said to my husband, oh, my God, I said, "Look at
this guy."
Then he was like, inches from my car, blowing the horn, screaming.
The other guy's hanging out the window, swearing at us.
>> COUTURE: Right.
>> He pulled away, and when he did, all of a sudden he went...
You could see the beer bottle.
>> He didn't do it underhanded, he threw it.
>> He threw the bottle.
>> The passenger, wearing a red T-shirt really threw it right at us.
>> Then hit the car and I hear it, you know, crash all over the street.
>> COUTURE: At what point did he come up beside you and try passing you?
>> At the stop sign.
>> At the stop sign.
>> COUTURE: At Broadway and Walker?
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> COUTURE: And then he went around you and basically, did he run you off the road?
Did he almost run you off the road when he passed you?
>> He tried to, I would say, yeah.
>> COUTURE: All right, that's good enough.
Why don't you guys sit right over here?
I'm going to come back and get your names.
I need your names and all your information.
>> Did you find them?
>> COUTURE: Yeah, we got them over here.
I want to hear the story about throwing the bottle.
What happened?
>> I told you I threw it.
>> COUTURE: Okay, so where did it happen at?
>> I don't know the street name, sir.
I honestly don't.
>> COUTURE: So after you guys were driving, going nuts, at what point did you decide you
were going to throw the bottle?
>> We were at an intersection.
I believe it was a stop sign, sir.
I didn't throw it...
I obviously didn't throw it to hit them because it went way away.
>> COUTURE: All right.
>> I was just being a (bleep).
I wasn't going out to hurt their car in any means.
We were right behind them, sir.
If I had a bottle, I could have hit them if I wanted.
>> COUTURE: Why don't you turn around for me?
>> Yes, sir.
>> COUTURE: You know you're going to jail, right?
>> I do now, sir.
>> COUTURE: Yep.
He's good to go, too.
He's good to go, too.
Just sit right there.
>> Yes, sir.
>> What am I being arrested for, sir?
>> COUTURE: Assault by means of your motor vehicle.
>> What was that?
>> COUTURE: Assault by means.
I'll be putting it at the bottom of the report.
I'll explain it to you later.
All right, here's where we're going.
Both got arrested.
Okay?
The driver is going to be charged with assault by means with a dangerous weapon, which
is a motor vehicle after he ran you off the road.
As far as him throwing the bottle at you, we're just going to treat it as a wanton
destruction of property.
It's an arrestable offense.
He did damage your vehicle.
So I would make a note, whether it's a small chip or not.
I just need all your information, both your information, and then I can let
you guys be on your way, and we'll take it from there.
>> Okay.
>> OFFICER MIKE KOVALEFF: This guy here has been online with our perverted justice
contributor, who's posing herself as a 13-year-old female from Palm Springs.
He says he's a 28-year-old male from Pasadena.
He's going by the name Sweet Jason.
Here's his photo online.
It's not a great photo, but that's his photo.
We've had three or four conversations with him, where he's made some direct comments
about stuff he wants to do.
He's also got a MySpace profile.
He asks if "it's okay I'm 28?" She says, "Yeah, is it okay I'm 13?"
He says, "I'm fine with it."
Matt's going to go over the operation side of it.
>> OFFICER MATT BEARD: This is the library.
Here's the stadium.
So you can kind of orient yourself.
We're going to use the bench that's just south of the south perimeter of the parking lot
there.
Stephanie, you're just going to kind of go over to this little bench there.
What we'll have you do is just face away from the parking lot.
That way he won't be able to see that you're not a 13-year-old girl, obviously from the street.
Okay.
That's all I really have unless anybody has any questions.
We'll go ahead and set up.
>> (over radio): So the conversation was that she was going to meet him here for sure,
right?
(garbled radio transmission) >> Hello?
>> KOVALEFF: Hey, it's Dave.
I just want to make sure we got you on the wire.
>> Oh, okay, can you hear me?
>> KOVALEFF: Yeah, it's perfect.
>> Oh, okay.
>> KOVALEFF: She's in place over there sitting on the bench.
We have our arrest team parked nearby.
Hopefully this guy comes rolling in and we scoop him up.
>> (over radio): Hey, you guys, he's here.
I think he's here.
He's pulling up right now.
He's getting out right now and he's walking towards you.
>> KOVALEFF: Yeah, looks like him over there.
10-4, I got him, blue jeans, white shirt.
Asian male.
>> I think something spooked him right now.
He's walking backwards.
He's just standing around looking.
>> (over radio): Hey, Dave, if he gets back in the car, I'll try to apprehend him, okay?
He's getting in the car right now.
>> KOVALEFF: You guys go ahead and take him down.
We're going to get that.
(siren blaring) Okay, looks like they just contacted him and rolled up on
him.
>> (over radio): Stop! Stop!
Yeah.
>> KOVALEFF: Okay, we're going to roll up on this guy.
Hopefully we don't run over here, run over anybody here in the meantime.
>> You got any weapons on you?
>> No.
>> What are you here for, sir?
>> Huh?
>> What are you here for?
>> I'm just, uh, driving around.
>> Okay, for what?
>> Nothing.
>> You have an email address?
>> Yes.
>> What is it?
>> JP...
>> What else?
>> JP@...
>> What else?
>> He's from Arcadia.
>> You didn't come here to meet a 13-year-old girl?
>> I would never do that.
>> Be honest with me.
>> Yes, I'm being honest with you.
>> Okay.
Why do you think we just pulled up here to talk to you?
>> SERGEANT BRYAN ANDERSON: Is it in there?
He got the map?
>> KOVALEFF: He's got the map showing directions to here.
>> ANDERSON: Good.
>> Do you recognize this fella here?
>> Who is that?
>> It looks like me.
>> It is you.
Okay, why don't you go ahead and step out of the car.
>> KOVALEFF: What did you come over here...
Who'd you come over here to meet?
>> BEARD: Step out of the car for me.
>> KOVALEFF: Who'd you come over here to see?
>> Huh?
>> KOVALEFF: Who'd you come over here to see?
>> Just driving around.
>> KOVALEFF: You were just driving around?
I'm asking you, why'd you drive all the way out to Palm Springs from Arcadia for?
That's the question.
You don't know?
You just decided out of the blue to drive out to Palm Springs today and come over here to the
park?
Sounds kind of fishy to me, man.
>> BEARD: Yeah, we showed him that.
Sit down. Relax.
Sit, sit, sit.
I got it.
It's right here.
>> ANDERSON: Can I see it?
You don't think that's you?
>> It looks like me.
>> ANDERSON: That is you, right?
>> BEARD: That's definitely him.
It even says it looks like him.
>> ANDERSON: I don't know if you noticed, but when you were sitting there looking the other
way, this guy comes in and he parked directly in front, and he's looking, too.
When he came he was looking all over the place.
Then as soon as he gets out, you know, he gets out of the car real quick and starts walking
towards you.
He probably got within, I'm saying at least 15 feet of you, then he's doing this.
He's like, looking around.
Then all of a sudden, I don't know if he realized you weren't the person or whatever, then he
started walking back and then he's doing the old felony stretch, you know, doing this
stuff, looking around.
Then I think he got spooked maybe.
He got in his car and was ready to leave, so we got, you know, got behind him and got him.
But you did a good job.
>> KOVALEFF: Picture lines up on this guy.
We knew he was coming from the L.A. area.
Here he is.
He's got directions printed up, south center, right where we told him our 13-year-old lived.
Um, that's just not a coincidence.
It's going to be kind of a big thing in court.
>> BEARD: Yeah, he's got a child seat back here that he's got all covered up with a jacket.
>> KOVALEFF: Yeah?
He's already been transported over to the jail.
This guy's real eager to talk.
>> BEARD: Okay, let's head over there right now then.
>> Where do you think this is coming from?
I mean, do you have attractions to children?
>> No.
>> Well, what do you think is the deal with this girl?
>> Honestly?
I was just going to try to...
>> ANDERSON: We've got Officer Beard right now talking to the suspect right now.
Officer Beard is pretty good at getting these guys to talk.
This guy's been Mirandized.
He's basically, you know, he signed it.
And he's more or less telling him exactly what happened, you know, what he was going to do.
He admits that he was probably going to have sex with her.
>> BEARD: So you brought those condoms in the possibility that you might?
>> Yeah, it was a small possibility.
But again, you know, I, because I've never done this before.
>> BEARD: Sure.
>> Not even to anybody.
>> BEARD: Right.
>> And so the possibility is there, sure.
>> ANDERSON: Well?
>> BEARD: It's all good.
He gave his consent.
We're going to be over at his place.
>> ANDERSON: Is that the consent form there?
>> Yeah, we're good.
>> ANDERSON: He told you everything.
>> Yep, we'll charge him with attempted lewd act with a child.
>> ANDERSON: Okay.
>> BEARD: Another long night.
>> OFFICER (over radio): 132 and Bush.
I've got him at gunpoint.
>> DISPATCHER: At gunpoint, 132 and Bush.
