>> Mark Mcguire: Well, chemistry is
much more of a visual science than a lot of students think, so
we use technology to try to show students what's going on
in our heads.
I tell students that many times when I'm trying to explain
the structure of a molecule to them that I see a movie
running in my head and they don't so I am trying to
use technology to show them the visuals that are going on
inside of my head, and it helps them see that the science is
more than just calculations and memorizing things.
I think my favorite part of using technology has been the
recent introduction of the smart board in Phipps Lecture Hall.
This is not just an ordinary SmartBoard where you project an
image on the SmartBoard and then write on it.
It's actually a 55-inch LCD monitor that we use as a
chalkboard, and then that is projected, with another
LCD projector, on the wall of the lecture hall.
So I can actually take a Power Point presentation, take
visuals, interact with those visuals, and, if we want to do
something more old fashioned like solve a math problem,
we can do that too.
It's all done on the smart board, and it's
projected up on the wall.
