When a reaction takes place, energy is released, an exothermic reaction.
Energy is enthalpy, enthalpy is heat.
This heat, this energy can be used to trigger another reaction which releases further energy.
These two energies are added together with all the energy released in other reactions.
In this way a small quantity of energy, added to other quantities of energy, suddenly becomes a great quantity.
It becomes an explosion.
So starting out from simple substances of innocuous appearance,
what we have in the end is a chemical explosion of unheard-of power.
CHAIN REACTIONS
Innocuous appearance.
Any chance of getting some breakfast round here?
Sorry, you're right. I need to get organized.
Olga's not coming today and I'm horribly late.
I'll leave you some money so you can get what you need.
I'll be back later this afternoon.
Mum, listen, I'm really busy this week
but I've got half an hour for a coffee in town on Thursday at 6, if you like.
Oh darling, that's not too much, is it?
I wouldn't want you to overdose on mother.
Very funny.
But where are you? You sound like you're panting. Are you ok?
Of course I'm ok dear.
I'm at my feminist gym class and I'm panting because the trainer's a bloody Nazi.
Feminist gym class?
Rebel mind in healthy body.
Yeah, ok. Anyway, I'll see you Thursday at 6.
Don't keep me hanging around like you normally do.
Milli put that phone down!
No, Mum. The police don't know anything, nobody knows anything.
Didn't your KGB spy tell you?
Sweetie, don't start off again on that espionage story.
You know I'm only doing it for you. You'd be lost without Olga.
Hey, be careful, will you? That hurt.
What are you doing?
Hang on, I've got another call coming in.
Stefano, you've saved my life.
Great. Now you've got to save mine.
Mum has organized another engagement party for me.
She doesn't give up easily, the old dear, does she? Must think she's in India.
Come on! Stop kidding! And don't you dare leave me on my own in this.
No, no, please! I hate Mother's parties.
I feel like I'm in some sort of docu-drama on the Risorgimento.
Silvia, I'm begging you. Aren't you curious to find out who the latest nice-girl-wife-to-be is?
Ok, I'll be there. But you owe me one hell of a big favour.
Hello, Mum? You still there?
That was Stefano. He told me about the party. Still pushing for an engagement then?
Of course! He's the only one in the family I have any hope of fixing up
seeing as how you...
Yes, Mum. Look, I'm just arriving at work so I've got things to do now, ok?
You think I haven't got things to do as well?
I've still got to take the dogs to pilates.
Right, good. Don't get too tired, now. Bye.
I see you're well ahead with things
the meeting hasn't even started yet.
Actually, they brought it forward. They've already been in there a while.
I thought they'd told you.
Ok, fine. Thank you.
Hi Laura.
Ah Silvia, Professor Limescale wants to see you.
Which one? Son or brother-in-law?
No, no. I mean him himself.
Since his retirement he's always round here now.
But I thought dinosaurs were extinct.
No, they survive thanks to you young researchers.
- Bye - Bye
Enter... Who is it?
It's Silvia. You wanted to see me.
When was that?
Glad you could join us, Alessia.
I thought the meeting started at 9.
In fact, it's 9 now. Take the minutes, will you, Alessia?
What the *** is going on here?
Chiara! Chiara!!
What is it?
What is it? What do you mean, what is it?
What is that monster doing in my house?
Who? Scarymovie? It's my sister, remember?
Don't get smart, young lady. Where did that television come from?
And those are my notes!
Big deal! Your notes for the Nobel Prize for mathematics!
Chemistry. Theoretical.
Yeah, whatever. It's all the same.
It is not the same!
And anyway I want to know how that hideous television got here.
I won it at strip poker.
Don't try to get clever with me! Where did you get the money?
What's it got to do with you?
It's got everything to do with me! It's my money and it's my house.
Look, this is really serious.
Cool it! You're not our mother! You're just nobody!
The eyes of sad people recognise each other at first glance
perhaps because they all go in the same direction.
