Today the Government has launched a new website. Communications.gov.au/mybroadband. It is the
result of a great deal of work by my department to identify the areas, the neighbourhoods
of Australia that have the best and indeed worst access to broadband.
A key part of our policy on the NBN is to prioritise wherever practical, the areas with
the worst broadband so that those people with no broadband or very bad broadband, and we
estimate to be about 1.6 million premises across Australia, will get their services
upgraded soonest. Of course there are quite a lot of people; many Australians who already
have access to very good broadband. Now what you can do is go to communications.gov.au/mybroadband,
type in your address and you will see what your neighbourhood is estimated to have in
terms of the availability of broadband, and the quality of broadband.
Now, you may decide or conclude that in fact, your broadband is not even as good as indicated
on the map, and we will have available, in a few weeks, a speed test that you can do,
the results which will then feed into the information that we've gathered here. So this
is designed to be an interactive tool that will, over time, enable many Australians,
hopefully hundreds of thousands of Australians to provide more granular information from
their own addresses. Now this is a very important part of our policy.
We do want to ensure that the NBN is completed, sooner, cheaper, and more affordably, and
above all, we want to ensure that those people with little or no broadband, get broadband
upgrades sooner. So go to communications.gov.au/mybroadband
and see where your neighbourhood stands in broadband availability and quality.
