We've been participating in the National Braille Challenge in the last 10 years.
We've had 13 students that have qualified to go to California
and participate as a national competitor.
Our students are tested in the areas of reading comprehension,
tactile graphics, speed and accuracy, spelling, and proof reading.
They are categorized into five different levels:
Apprentice start at 1st and 2nd grade,
the Freshmen are tested at 3rd and 4th grade,
Sophomore 5th and 6th grade,
Junior Varsity 7th, 8th, and 9th grade,
and our Varsity group is the biggest group,
which includes the 10th, 11th, and 12th graders.
Today we'll be working with the Varsity group
and they will be starting off with the "speed and accuracy".
They get about 15 to 20 minutes to practice, using their Victor Stream.
And then after that they will be tested in reading comprehension,
and proof reading, and tactile graphics.
So we're very, very proud of our students as participants.
We have 35 students this year and we usually have 35 to 40, 45 students each year.
