okay everybody it's Earth Day today and so I thought I would throw together
a quick vlog style video to kind of um... highlight a couple of different
organizations that i have participated in
uh... for kind of quite a while
uh... these places are widely available and uh... they're pretty earth conscious
we're all pretty familiar with the uh... the big trifecta reduce, reuse, and recycle
each of these organizations to really focus on the reused part of uh...
that formula
alright so the first agency is actually represented out by the front of
my house we um... we're out by the sidewalk here and uh... if you haven't heard
about little free libraries you should check them out, I'm going to have the link down
below you check these guys out this is a movement that started in Hudson
Wisconsin and has gone global there are a little free libraries all around the
world
and um... the're spreading like wildfire. So this is my library and uh...
no two libraries are the same day everybody gets their connected to choose
a builder on the way they want to
but the basic principles the same this is um, a lending library
so any books that you put in here have the potential to never come back
but on the other hand you also have a lot of people who will donate books uh... on
their own and so whoever is the owner doesn't necessarily always have to have
all the books for here about half of the incident donated for other people
so that's pretty cool. I also put a LCD solar light on mine so that
we could use it at night time. We're in minnesota so sometimes the nights are pretty long
then when you register with little free library they also give you ah, one of
these little plaques. you can see that my library's number is
1032, which is pretty cool.
if you go to their website which I've linked below
you will see a map of different libraries have been registered in your
community
already i have run down to my basement which you can see behind me is a mess.
part of the clutter down here is left over construction junk. alright so i've
got
uh... let me switch the video around for you
and i think i got a box a leftover cedar shakes, I've got
uh... some of this wire shelving and some two by fours back there
So you say to yourself, "what am I going to do with all that stuff"
well the habitat for humanity restore is an organization in quite a few
communities in a lot of different regions. You're not going to find these stores in every
town
but you will find them somewhere within a decent drive of where you are.
and they take in a lot of construction uh... leftovers sometimes it is demo
stuff like they'll get permission to go into a building that's going to
be demolished
and uh... clear out like the door frames or doors and any fixtures, and faucets...
those kinds of things that
um... and so they have lots and lots of different avenues for how they get
materials
and you can be one of them they take uh... donations from homeowners just like
you and me
and turn around and sell them to other people
so that's a great organization again check the links down below and you can
uh... search the web site for restore near you
OK, I've sort of just spun around in my basement and right behind you could see
more junk
this stuff is uh... totes full of clothes that my son's have about out grown
and there's a couple of normal outlets for the stuff you could certainly take
it to a thrift store because certainly to have a garage sale or use a website
service like craigslist
I've kind of gotten tired of some of those things. you put a lot of work
into garage sales and you don't always make that much money
and um with thrift stores, i try to take advantage of the tax credits
and if you get to so much money then you have to get into other forms in as an
impact on how we see is the file your taxes
another option that's out there that you may not have hearrd of... is um, a web site
called freecycle dot org. check the link below
these guys are great because you can post
that uh... stuff that you have to also postings your interest in getting
and so you could put on there uh... i've got a whole
told full 4T boys clothes and then somebody will
uh, reply to that post
and uh... you set up an exchange point it could be at your house, could be at
their house, could be ah, I've done exchanges at uh... parking lots on my
way to work
so however you do that part of it
it's a way to get stuff back and forth and it kind of a neat way to meet people.
the thing about this website is there is no selling, no bartering, no exchanges
no nothing other than a this is what i got if you wanted it to yours
or this is what I'm looking for if you've got one laying around I'd love to take it
off your hands.
so again click the link and uh...
get to know your neighbors
all right so that's it for me
happy Earth Day everybody, get out there make a difference
