This is the Leica V Lux 30. It replaces the V Lux 20 model that we saw last year. One
improvement that's been made to this camera over its predecessor is that the V Lux 30
can capture full HD video at 1080i resolution, while the V Lux 20 can only capture video
with a 720p resolution. Now the V Lux 30 has an impressive 16x optical zoom starting at
a wide 24 millimeters and expanding to 384 millimeters, so you don't have to walk too
far to get close to your subject.
It's got a 14.1 megapixel sensor, and at full resolution, it's able to capture up to 10
frames per second with a reduced resolution of 3. 5 megapixels. You can increase that
to up to 60 frames per second. On the back of the camera is a 3 inch touch screen display
so you can use that touch screen to leaf through the photographs you've all ready taken or
access and control some of the features.
The screen has a resolution of 460,000 dots. Now like the V-Lux 20, the V-Lux 30 has a
GPS built into it so it will be able to tell you exactly where your shot was taken. It
might not seem like a terribly useful feature, but it is perhaps when you go away sight seeing
and you get a number shots of varying, different things and then labeling them all becomes
a bit of a nuisance.
It's also got a 3D still photo mode so you access it through the dial on the top here
and you press down the shutter and move the camera along like so. It takes a series of
images which it then stitches together and creates a 3D still image which you can view
on a 3D monitor or a 3D TV. So we'll be looking to book the Leica V-Lux 30 into a slot in
our lab soon, so we can see how it fares against the other compact cameras that are out there
on the market.
Let's get an impression of how it does get on before we get those full test results.
You can check out the full review of the Panasonic Lumix T-Zed 20 which is near on identical
to this model. And you'll also find a number of test shots that we've taken today on this
camera on our website at which.co.uk/technology.
