Hi, this is HexyWoo and welcome to my review of
Poöf Vs the Cursed Kitty. It's kind of a cross between a platformer
and Tower Defence. It's very
old-school, as you can probably see. It's old school in a few ways,
it plays like an old-school game, the difficulty is pretty old-school,
but also when you fire it up there are no
video or audio options at all. It's a bit of a downside for me.
You can't play any way other than full-screen
and you can't turn music down or sound effects down
or anything like that, you can only turn your main PC volume down.
Which is fine, but it's a little bit annoying.
It has a kind of loose story, which is a bit weird
You play as Poöf, and he's a dog
who's been given a cursed kitty who lays golden eggs
and all the monsters are jealous of this
golden laying kitty cat and try to steal it.
The only this I don't understand with this story,
is why the kitty is strung up
above a drain-pipe. It doesn't seem a very friendly
way to keep this poor little kitty cat. I also don't quite understand why, when
a monster gets to the cat, you die. But, that's what happens.
The only thing that really matters in this game is score
and you get your score by picking up gems and you get more gems
if you can get combo kills. You can unlock
different backgrounds, different looks for Poöf
different looks for the kitty and different music
by how many enemies you kill and how many gems you pick up, how many combo kills you
get, it's all added up at the end
every time you die and it works its way towards little unlocks.
But there's also missions and you get three
challenges every time and when you complete these challenges
you unlock abilities.
The first one is you can lay golden poo and that
slows down enemies, but there are some enemies, the slug dog things.
they eat poo, which is nice!
So they'll destroy it, you have to be careful where you lay it down. You also get
towers;
lighting towers, arrow towers, there's
saws... there's all sorts of things and you unlock them as you go and
if you get comfortable with using certain weapons
and have a certain strategy the challenges will make sure you
try something different. At the moment I'm trying to unlock one
for killing 25 enemies with saws and they're horrible
because I can't put them in the high-traffic areas
because the saws also hurt me, as do the
arrow towers, they hurt you as well. I'm so
bad at avoiding them. I actually did get an OK run recorded but unfortunately
DXtory
didn't record the sound so I can't use it, so you're just gonna have little
snippets of quite bad gameplay of this because
I'm not very good at these games, I'm sure I used to be, but I guess easier games have
made me rubbish at this now. The gameplay gets harder as you go along.
You'll notice when you first start out you can just jump on things once
and kill them and... that doesn't last very long!
It starts getting more and more and more hectic... and there's the golden eggs that the
kitty cat lays
will destroy all enemies that are on screen in one go
which is really handy when things get bad but the eggs always show up when
you don't really need them
you have to try and avoid touching them. you just kill the enemies by jumping on
them
You can unlock attacks by finishing missions and there's also leader boards
so you can compete with your friends I don't have any friends who play it though
so I don't have anyone to compete with. There's loads of different
enemies and they all have different characteristics; like I said the slug
dogs will
eat the golden poo and remove it, some of the creatures
can survive going through the lighting towers because they're so fast.
You need to have a strategy to drop down golden poos
around towers to keep enemies stuck there so they take more damage
you also have to be really careful because the items that you pick up
the last item you picked up is the first one that you use, you have to decide whether
you want to use that
as the item or if you want to use it as a golden
poo and it's really really easy to forget
which item you just picked up and to accidentally
waste it, you have to be thinking about what are you doing all
the time and it does get really, really hectic.
But it's a fun little game, it's not very expensive which is nice
it's cute to look at, the music's good, it's got humour
I mean, you're dropping poo to stop
monsters getting a kitty cat... it's silly!
One thing I will say about the gameplay in this, if it looks
a little stuttery or a little laggy, the game doesn't play like that as soon as I
hit record in DXtory
it started dropping frames, so it's fine until you record
don't hold that against it because it isn't in the actual game itself
but I recommend checking it out especially if you like old-school
difficult games
because it is very difficult and it gets very difficult, but
it's got addictive re-playability so have fun and drop some poo!
