Whatsup guys? Shizno here. Welcome to the second episode of my Elder Scrolls lore series.
This time we are going to talk abou the gods, demons, angels or whatever else you want to
call the supernatural beings of elder scrolls. Lets get started!
In the Elder Scrolls universe the divines are basically divided into two cathegories.
One of them is called Aedra and the other one is Daedra. Aedra means "ancestors" and
Daedra means "not our ancestors." Both of these groups can be refered to as Et'Ada,
which means "original spirits." There are also supernatural beings who belong to neither
of these groups. One of these would for example be Padomay, the agent of change, who is tought
to have been involved in the creation of Daedra and Aedra. Faithful members of the Dark Brotherhood
worship him under a different name along with his wife, the Dark Mother. Its Sithis. Anyway,
in the last episode we talked about how Lorkhan tricked some of the Aedra during the creation
of the mortal plane Nirn and used their energy and powers to finish the project. When the
Aedra found out, some of them tried to flee to save the remainder of their powers, while
others stayed and sacrificed themselves to finish the creation. Those that escaped, one
of them being Magnus, are said to have torn through the fabric of Oblivion creating sun
and stars. Others just withdrew from the project, maintaining a certain degree of their divinity,
but were still left bound to the mortal plane. Others sacrificed themselves to finish the
creation, which left them weak and unable to interact with the world. There was also
another group of Aedra, who tried to reproduce to keep on living, but each generation took
more of their divinity away, which eventually resulted in them becoming the various races
of man and beast, that we can play as and interact with in Elder Scrolls games. As I
have stated in my previous video, a planet and a plane are one and the same in the Elder
Scrolls universe. Therefor everything that the mortals see as other planets are probably
other divines, who are bound to their planes. The form of planets is just something that
the mortal brain creates to make it easy to process and so, mortals do not actually see
other planes or gods when they look into the sky. The Aedra bound to their planes cannot
physicaly visit the mortal planet Nirn, but they can still influence it. There are 8 planets
that we know about. These are believed to be realms of the eight divines. Their names
are: Akatosh - The Dragon God of Time and the chief
god of the pantheon Arkay - God of Life and Death
Dibella - Goddess of Beauty Julianos - God of Wisdom and Logic
Kynareth - Goddess of Air Mara - Mother Goddess and Goddess of Love
Stendarr - God of Mercy Zenithar - God of Work and Commerce
These 8 divines are commonly worshiped across Tamriel along with a 9th divine called Talos,
who was originally a mortal. But not all people or races worship them and since the lore is
so rich you can and will stumble upon NPCs who may worship some other Aedra or even Daedra.
One of the main differences between a Daedra and an Aedra is that Aedra can be killed,
but if a Daedra dies, its soul just returns to Oblivion, unless it is killed in Oblivion,
which would result in a permanent death. Because of their destructive powers Daedra are thought
to be evil and chaotic. They come in many different forms ranging from beasts to humanoids.
Daedra live in Oblivion, which is a plane seen by humans as the darkness of space. From
there Daedra cannot interact with the mortal world any more than the Aedra can, but they
can be summoned by a mage skilled in the school of conjuration. The strongest Daedra are the
Daedric Princes. There are 16 of them and the list can be found in the description.
Although they are all called princes, they have no gender. Each of these Princes rules
over one plane of Oblivion. Apart from the princes there are also lesser Daedra, which
are said to have been created by the princes in order to serve them, fight for them or
just as a source of entertainment. The lesser Daedra are the ones you would usually encounter
in the world and fight them. The Oblivion planes are normally not reachable, but in
the Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion the player was able to get into Oblivion through Oblivion
games, that were spread out through the world. Also, it was the only recorded instance when
a Daedric Prince got out of Oblivion and entered the mortal world. Most of the races fear Daedra,
but Dark Elves, for example, worship them, but it is considered illegal in Tamriel. One
of the reasons why it is illegal is because most people think of Daedra as evil or as
demons because of their destructive powers, but that is not entirely true. Daedra are
more agents of change. They do not do what they do because it is evil, but because it
brings in change. They do not do it because they love suffering. Death, for example, is
a weird concept for them, because when you kill a Daedra its soul returns to Oblivion,
which makes them almost immortal and so death is not such a serious matter for them. Alrighty,
so that is basically all the general information on the Daedra and the Aedra. Next time we
will talk a bit more specifically about some of the Daedra and Aedra. For example Arkay
from the Aedra and Sheogorath from the Daedra, because they are fairly interesting too. Join
me next time to learn more about these pointless facts. Bye. *weird noise*
