This machine is a 3D printer allowing
the transformation of some plastic filament
into different objects, such as the one being made here.
What this kind of machine can change, is that what we are going to share
is the representation of the concrete object.
I am going to share the representation with an outsider,
and the outsider will be able to re-create this concrete object,
in the same way I created it at first sight.
Therefore it is really an evolution,
we go out of the virtual to make this virtual tangible.
This is a tool, like a hammer.
It is a tool among so many others in Fab Labs.
Initialy a hackerspace is a place where hackers meet,
and a Fab Lab is more a place where one can come
to build objects, achieve personal plans...
The first thing one finds here is other people
who tend to make the same thing, and understand you.
The second interesting thing here is a much larger space
than what I could have home, where one can share really interesting machines also.
It is something I have realized not very long ago,
but it partakes of meetings with people here :
you are going to say " I don't like very much the way it goes, industry,
the world and all this", but today I happen to be an engineer,
therefore I am part of industry, that's it.
Therefore it is up to me to do things in another way.
If I don't like the way industry is built,
up to me to find a place, and a way to make it otherways.
Whoever does not want to see technology as magic
is more than welcome in a hackerspace because we precisely struggle against this.
In a way, yes, there is a political aspect in this,
because if one knows the technology there is behind it,
one would say "it is scandalous to pay 50 cents for one SMS, for instance".
INSTRUCTIONS TO ELECTRICAL VEHICULE USERS OPENING THE HOOD IS ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN
I am in my Volta, electric car from 1993,
which was entirely fixed up in ElectroLab, and it is a true pleasure.
It is also a way to show that we are perfectely able to fix, improve, hack
almost any kind of object, including electric cars.
To use an electric car, in 2011, this is absolutely not revolutionary.
It is a pity that we are the only ones to do it, or really try to do it.
