I decided when I was young that I wanted to serve a mission
and religion was always important to me growing up, so I put my papers in
Eu comecei a pensar em Brasil e a estudar Brasil
eu achei uma história super interessante,
e optei pra me especializar na história do Brasil
And the cruch actually made assigments
so I got a letter back that said: You're going to Brazil
The brazilian experience is always a lot more conversations, a lot about many more topics
and a lot more warms in the salutations and the proximity
Eu acho o povo brasileiro super legal, super simpático,
as tradições, as culturas, a comida, os esportes, tudo!
Eu realmente adorei o país!
The brazilian people in most of the areas
were I worked, were really warm and open,
and a lot of people would hang out on the neighborhoods,
and be on the streets, and a lot of
people would hang out on their front porches
and converse with their neighbors
People are going out for lunch for two hours and enjoying conversations,
they go for dinner and they enjoy conversations, cafézinhos,
they go at night to 'um barzinho' to just talk and enjoy some music.
Here you go to business meeting
It's just such a wonderful collective, sort of, sense of community
and you would see, you know, 7 or 8 neighbors kids
playing soccer, you know, on the side of the street,
you don't see that a whole lot in there
And that was really nice
to get to see what family time was like in Brazil,
how people came together, and it wasn't a rush meal and they would take a nap after
they did had a big lunch. I really felt that people
welcomed me, and they were really wonderful
You are a very latin-american culture, there's a lot more worth
in the communication with the professors and the students, and the students
with themselves or the professor with professor.
O estudante brasileiro, você não tem que,
você abre a boca pra iniciar a aula, aí você pode fechar a boca porque os estudantes vão embora
With brazilians students, students from any other place in latin america
you engage in many conversation about different things, here you
work with students and you talk about the class. - I was out on the streets
everyday talking to the brazilian people, I wasn't being quiet
or just kind of go in my own business, so
being force to comunicate with people, I think it really helped me
to developed the languages skills more quickly. - Naquela época,
primeiro lugar não existia internet, nem
nada, entendeu? Então, raramente você escutava inglês
falado no Brasil, raramente em 84 você achava
um jornal ou revista escrito em inglês, o que pra mim
foi bom, quer dizer que eu passei um ano no Brasil, sem escutar
ninguém falando inglês. - It took me a while to
remember or learn, I should say,
learn 'o sotaque regional'
e 'a ginga'? - They were every bit as happy, if not
happier in their lifes, then a lot of people that I knew back
here, and that was really eyed opening for me to see in people
that it doesn't matter how much you have, it doesn't matter what possession you have
what really matters is that you are making the most of your life
and you are having fun
