The University's plans for a new Main Library are to build a new facility to the west of
the current Main Library and the new library will include a cultural gateway and a café
facility. Now is the perfect time to be building new libraries because we now have the opportunity
to build spaces that really really take advantage of all the various information resources that
we have available and we need to provide different kinds of spaces to the ones that we have in
the past. I understand why some people have sentimental attachment to the façade of the
main library and what I would ask people to do is not judge the book by its cover. If
people really thought about how effective the building is as a library they would agree
with me that we need to do something new.
Our students will benefit from a new library because it will be the most fantastic space
where they can work in the ways that they would like to work and interact with all the
various resources that we provide for them in a way that they simply can't now. But it's
really important that people realise that all the work that's going on right now around
the collections and putting in new resource discovery tools will benefit the students
who won't be here when the new library is built.
The new library will be transformational for staff, students and the wider community. I
think what it will do is show people just what incredible resources the university has,
the incredible research that's going on here and will also be a showcase for everything
that we believe in and the way that we want people to teach, learn and research.
Please support the new main library project because you will be supporting generations
of students and researchers at the University of Birmingham for many, many years to come.
