Episode 2: True identity, Sensing shamanism.
I've been active on the dance scene for a while as a producer as well as a DJ.
I also go by the name of True Identity.
Some time ago, I realised that I wasn't enjoying the scene anymore
because everyone was doing the same thing.
So, I explored spirituality to find the depth
that was missing from the scene.
Last year, this search led me to a group of shamans
and I attended one of their rituals.
It made such an unbelievable impression on me
that I decided that I had to make something of it.
An Ayahuasca session makes you much more aware
of how you use frequencies, sound and melodies
and what effect this will have on listeners.
At the start of this year,
I went to Peru and attended some Shipibo shaman rituals.
Here, I got a small taste of how the shamans
live in harmony with nature.
More importantly, the shamans introduced me to Icaros.
Icaros are a range of songs that have been sung as part of so-called healing ceremonies
for thousands of years and are handed down from one generation to the next.
This gave me the idea to blend electronic music
with shamanism and spirituality.
So, I'm currently working the Icaros into my own music
and trying to combine the two worlds.
At this year's Mysteryland, I'll be releasing my CD, Sensing Shamanism.
Profits from the sale of these CD's will benefit a number of organisations in Peru,
which aim to preserve the knowledge of the shamans,
preserve their living environments,
spread their know-how and show us,
westerners,
how we can learn from the shaman way of life in harmony with nature.
