I was never an altar boy. I was never a member of any church groups.
When I was making this film, I didn't think about the consequences.
I started going to church of my own will when I was 21.
This is a controversial film.
When I'm making a film, I don't calculate.
I think that allows me to remain free from compromise.
It is not easy to get a film into a festival like Berlin.
The great thing about this is that we are all friends. We trust each other.
We came up with this story together, inspired by a few articles in the press.
This story is timeless and placeless.
- Come here! You'll step in for me. - He can't play ball at all!
We knew that we wanted to make this film in Mazurian villages, which we've known for years.
People in that world have a different perception of city folk.
They are completely foreign to them.
This area is in the East, but we called it our own Wild West.
- Father, you drink beer? - I need to check if it's not watered down.
Małgośka and I had several conversations with members and former members of the clergy.
- You know, man is often lost. - Just like sheep.
We had one acting assumption from the start.
We wouldn't act out any emotion that wasn't real, wasn't authentic.
Our first film in Main Competition since 2009 is a film by a director from the young generation.
I am very happy about that.
That's true, there was nobody from our generation who could show a film in competition.
And then it happened.
I really want to start working on my next project.
The longer I am here, the more I think about my next film.
Things like this give you the strength to keep on working.
To be more confident, less afraid.
The festival is still on. We are nervous and very excited about this.
It is a big deal for us.
