G'day I'm Brett Today I'm taking a quick look at the Garmin
GPSmap 62s. It's an easy to use system with a straight forward menu. This particular model
features a 3-axis tilt-compensated compass and a barometric altimeter.
The unit is waterproof and comes with a built in worldwide basemap, giving you a reference
point to your location. It also supports the installation of topographic, marine and road
maps.
Now I've added a marine mount and vehicle power cable to turn the unit into a vehicle
navigator. The marine mount simply mounts with 3 screws or double sided tape. I used
only one existing screw hole with tape to avoid drilling holes into my dash. This had
provided a rock solid mounting.
The mount can be tilted or swivelled into position.
The power cable fits in to a 12v socket and powers the GPS by the USB port on the rear.
Overall I'm quite happy with this set up. Although the screen is only 2.6inches, it
is quite readable at this distance. It's easy to scroll through the pages and track my progress
with the trip computer and maps.
Being portable I can unclip it from the mount, attach the carabiner and take it hiking with me. Hooroo.
