When an assignment is created, a grade column is created automatically.
Assignments that have been submitted but not graded are indicated with an exclamation mark,
which is the Needs Grading icon in the grade column.
This tutorial will show you how to quickly access and grade a single assignment attempt
in the Blackboard Grade Center.
There are numerous ways to access the Grade Assignment page where you can review a student's
assignment and assign a grade.
In this example, we will access it through the Full Grade Center link.
To begin grading a single assignment attempt, start by going to the Control Panel on the
lower left side of your screen.
Scroll down until you see the link for Grade Center.
Click the Grade Center link and expand additional options down.
Next, click on the Full Grade Center link.
You're now in Full Grade Center view.
Here, you'll see rows and columns with icons containing information about assignments and
other things that need to be graded.
In this example, we're going to go to a single assignment attempt on the Planet Paper assignment
by our example student, Tony Brown.
In this cell, click the drop-down arrows and look for the attempt link.
This shows the Needs Grading icon and the date the assignment was attempted.
Click this link.
You are now on the Grade Assignment page.
Here, you can view student-submitted materials and assign a grade.
You can navigate among users and attempts.
You can view rubrics if any are associated.
You can grade anonymously and view information about an assignment.
Let's look a little more closely at some of the options on this page.
Assuming I got to this page from the Full Grade Center page, I can quickly jump to other
items to view and grade.
To navigate to another item, simply click on the Jump to... button.
This will change the bar to a slightly different look.
Here, I can go under Item in the drop-down list and find another assignment to review
or grade.
When I'm finished selecting the item, the user and the attempt, I simply hit the Go
button to navigate to that item.
If I want to grade attempts anonymously, I can click the Hide User Names button.
This will check their names to User 1, User 2, etc.
I can view the next student's attempt at this assignment quickly by hitting the Save and
Next button or using the Right arrow along this pane.
You can see in this example I'm looking at Ashby Cooper's attempt rather than Tony Brown's.
If I click the Save as Draft button, I can save my comments and feedback to the user
so I can return to grading it at a later time.
This assignment remains ungraded and an exclamation mark will remain in my grades and in the Grade
Center.
By clicking the Assignment Information link, I can expand this down to view the following
information.
The instructions, due date, submitted date, and the status of this assignment.
Next, let's look at how to review what a student has submitted, assign a grade, and fill out
some of the other options on this page.
Please note that if an assignment is in progress, you must submit the assignment so that you
can grade it.
Let's look at reviewing the current attempt.
In this example, a student submitted a Word document called saturn_brown.doc
The blue link in Step 2 is actually a link to this Word document.
Clicking this link will give you the standard options for dealing with an attachment.
In this case, I clicked Open..and the Word document opens right on my screen.
From here, I can review the document or save it to my desktop for later.
After reviewing the Word document submission, I can assign a grade by simply typing in the
box called Grade in Step 3.
Also in this step, I can optionally type comments in the Feedback to User box and attach a file
for the student to review if I like.
I can also use the Text Editor functions to format the text and add files, images, links,
and multimedia.
In Step 4, you can optionally type comments in the Grading Notes box and attach files
that only YOU can access.
Again, the information here is only for you and can only be accessed by the instructor.
The bottom of the Grade Assignment page contains additional options when you're finished assigning
your grade and reviewing student submissions.
Clicking Save as Draft will save any comments and feedback so you can return to grading
it at a later time.
The assignment remains ungraded and an exclamation mark will still appear in My Grades and in
the Grade Center.
Student cannot access your draft comments through My Grades.
Clicking Save and Next will take you to the next assignment to grade if one is available.
Clicking the Save and Exit button will return you to either the Full Grade Center page,
the Needs Grading page, or the Grade Details page...depending on where your grading began
and where you were in your previous step.
In this example, I'll click the Save and Exit button and return to the Full Grade Center
view.
You'll notice now in the cell in the Grade Center, there's an 85 by Tony Brown's grade
for the Planet Paper assignment.
This has replaced the green exclamation mark that was there previously.
We have now successfully assigned a grade of 85 to this assignment.
