How to assemble and shape the zombie finger.
Hi guys! Welcome back!
Today we are going to assemble and shape the zombie finger,
and add a little detail to make it even more ghoulish!
For today you’ll need the light weight yarn that is the same color of the finger
and the medium weight off-white yarn.
You’ll also need an embroidery needle, a yarn needle, a long needle, sewing pins
and scissors.
Today we are going to start by attaching the nail to the rounded end of the finger.
Weave in the end from the beginning of the nail.
Thread the long tail left at the end on the embroidery and needle join.
Secure the nail to the finger with sewing pins after making sure you like its placement.
Attach the nail by catching strands on the finger and going under the slipstitches on the nail.
First catch a strand on the finger that’s under the edge of the nail, and pull the yarn.
Insert the needle under the 1st slipstitch, pull the yarn.
Insert the needle under the next slipstitch, in the opposite direction, pull the yarn.
Catch another strand on the finger and pull the yarn.
Insert the needle under the last slip stitch it came out of, pull the yarn.
Insert the needle under the next slipstitch, in the opposite direction, pull the yarn.
Catch another strand on the finger and pull the yarn.
Repeat until the nail is completely secured.
I think that this method of attaching flat pieces going under slipstitches gives them
a much neater and finished look.
Finish off and weave in ends.
Next we are going to make that special detail which is a bit of bone showing through the
chopped end of the finger.
Cut a length of the off-white yarn and thread it on your yarn needle.
I like to use the yarn needle to make the bone to give it more volume.
First we need to secure the yarn to the finger.
Insert the needle anywhere on the finger and make it come out on another spot between the stitches.
Pull the yarn gently until its end disappears.
Secure the yarn on the finger as if you were finishing off.
Insert the needle into the same spot it came out before, and make it come out a little bit
off center of the red end of the finger.
Pull until the knot goes into the finger.
To make the bone we are going to make 2 french knots side by side giving the impression that
the joint of the finger is sticking out.
Place the needle in front of the yarn crossing it.
Wrap the yarn around the needle 5 to 6 times.
Don’t let the wraps come undone.
The more you wrap, the bigger the knot becomes.
Insert the needle into the finger, close to where the yarn first came out of,
but not exactly on the same spot.
Make the needle come out on the green part of the finger.
Pull the yarn gently completing the 1st knot!
Secure the yarn and make another french knot right next to the first.
Place the needle in front of the yarn crossing it.
Wrap the yarn around the needle 5 to 6 times.
Remember to finish the last wrap under and to the back of the needle.
Insert the needle into the finger, close to where the yarn first came out of,
but not exactly on the same spot.
Finish off and weave in ends completing the bone!
All that’s left to do is the bends in the finger!
See where you want the finger to bend, and mark it with sewing pins.
Grab a length of the green yarn, join the ends and thread them on the long needle.
Secure the yarn to the right of the pin from the top.
Insert the needle under a loop in the finger, pull the yarn gently until you have a loop,
insert the needle through the loop and pull securing the yarn.
Insert the needle into the finger in the space at the bottom of the loop you secured the yarn to.
Make it come out at the other side of the finger.
Pull the yarn hiding the knot.
Bring the yarn around to the front and insert the needle into the finger in the same space as before.
Make it come out at the left next to the marking in the bottom.
Bend the finger to the front where the yarn is laying across, press down with your thumb
and pull the yarn creating the 1st bend.
Bring the yarn around to the front, insert the needle in the right side of the finger
and make it come out at the spot where you secured the yarn.
Bend the finger, press down with your thumb and pull the yarn to create the second bend.
Adjust the tension of the yarn in the bends if you need to.
Once you’re happy with it insert the needle into the same spot it just came out of
and make it come out at the back of the finger.
Finish off and weave in the ends.
And there you have it, a zombie finger ready for your Halloween party! =D
If you change the color of the yarns you can make a chopped off human finger!
This one was the first I made, I made it for my mother when she almost chopped off her
own finger while preparing dinner, this way she could always have a back up finger!
As you can see this one doesn’t have the slip stitches around the nail.
I personally prefer it with the slips stitches.
It’s neater, even though a chopped off finger is anything but neat! =P
Hope you have fun making your zombie and chopped off fingers
and don’t forget to share pictures of your finished projects!
