GOTTFREDSON: One of the things that attracts me about the University of Oregon
is its commitment and its passion for our mission for public higher education and a public research university.
TO STUDENTS: I think Oregon is a great place to live.
And our commitment really is to public access to the highest possible quality educational experience.
That's our guarantee to the citizens of the state. That's what we stand for.
It's an animating purpose for nearly everything we do.
So we have the twin pillars of access and quality.
And its our obligation to ensure that we meet both of those objectives.
And the University of Oregon has done a marvelous job of doing that by its traditions, and it does so today.
ECKSTEIN: Ultimate Frisbee is really big here. I don't know if they have it at Irvine.
But they play Frisbee a lot here.
HINMAN:They have it at Irvine.
ECKSTEIN: They have it? OK, well it's really big here.
GOTTFREDSON: They maybe invented it there.
HINMAN: It's just a little thing. (LAUGHTER)
ECKSTEIN: I think he's a great fit. I think that he brings a clear record of strong leadership,
and also really values higher education, and a public commitment to higher education.
And I think that's something we need here.
GOTTFREDSON, TO REPORTERS: We maintain our commitment to access and quality, those are the twin pillars
that our institutions is built upon. We'd appreciate more support for that.
But when we don't have it we find it elsewhere.
Because we're not going to change our mission, our idea, our values,
and that is the University of Oregon should be for Oregon citizens.
It should provide the highest possible educational experience.
