So initially I got into Triathlon because I wanted to lose weight. And I have tried
everything. I'd worked with doctors and nutritionists and trainers and nothing was working. After
two years a friend suggested that I sign up for this class, and so I signed up. The only
problem was, I didn't know how to swim, and I really haven't been on a bike since I was
six years old. So I went to the class and everyone jumped in the pool, and I thought,
"Oh how hard can it be to swim?" And I watched people move their arms and every third time
they move their arm they take a breath and i'm like, "Okay, I Can do this." And so I
jumped in the pool and I couldn't even make a link to pool either lifeguard were about
to jump in and save me. And I knew at that point I wanted to really do Triathlon, so
I had to learn how to swim. I found the book Total Immersion Swimming and I read through
in one sitting and I thought, "Okay, I think this is something I can do." I took it to
the pool and I went through each of the exercises and within an hour I was swimming indefinitely.
Because it really taught body position and that's what i needed and so I finally learned
to swim. And that wasn't enough for me I couldn't just know how to swim I really have to know
how to compete. And so I entered my first Triathlon, did okay but i got the Triathlon
bug and started working a little bit more on my form back through all the total immersion
exercises. And within a year I went from somebody who couldn't swim to a national championship.
So how did Total Immersion changed my life? Well it took from someone who was 40 lbs.
overweight to very healthy fit individual. It took me from somebody who was afraid to
swim in the water to somebody who goes open water swimming every morning of the week.
And it took me from somebody who couldn't even swim the length of the pool to a National
Championship in under a year.
